LSC honors media with annual awards

Sportswriter Nick Eatman was recognized for the first time and Midwestern State broadcaster Bill Powers for the second occasion as the annual Lone Star Conference media awards were announced Monday by league officials.

Eatman won the Kirk Hill Award as the league’s top sportswriter, while Powers was recognized with the Jake Trussell Award as the outstanding broadcaster of the year.

The awards, which distinguish those who best promote the LSC and its members through their work in the media, are selected annually by sports information directors at the LSC’s 16 member institutions.

Eatman, a staff writer for DallasCowboys.com, has been a correspondent for the LSC since 2008. He has attended the LSC Basketball Championship for the past three years and provided outstanding coverage and media support with feature and game stories. In addition, Eatman previewed the fall sports and basketball teams for all 15 schools in 2009-10.

Powers has served as the "Voice of the Mustangs" for the last three seasons while relaying the excitement of MSU's LSC championships in football and men's basketball last season on KWFB BOB-FM. He was previously tabbed the league's top broadcaster in 1989 during his tenure at the former East Texas State (Texas A&M-Commerce) before serving as the school's sports information director for 15 years over two terms. Powers moved to Midwestern State as sports information director in 2005 before earning a promotion to Assistant Athletic Director in 2007.
