LSC Softball Championship: UIW punches ticket to final

Incarnate Word punched a ticket to the LSC Softball Championship final with a 6-3 triumph over Midwestern State in the semifinals at Pioneer Field Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals, who entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed, will play in their first-ever championship final on Saturday at 6 p.m. UIW (28-23) faces the winner of the Angelo State and West Texas A&M semifinal, which started at 2:30 p.m.

For fans that can’t make it out to Pioneer Field, Saturday night's championship game will be web streamed live on FoxSportsSouthwest.com.

Ashley Freeman was the Cardinals offensive catalyst, including a lead-off triple, which led to a three-run first inning. Freeman had three hits to raise her batting average to .396 this season.

UIW added three more runs in the third frame including a two-run home run by Lea Padilla, her seventh long ball this year. Padilla finished the game with two hits and four RBIs.

Briana Sanchez (17-10) picked up the win in the circle for the Cardinals with an eight-hit, four strike-out effort including six shutout innings.

The Mustangs season ends at 26-25.
