The 2013 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships began to take shape on Friday with the weather warming up and the sun coming out producing a number of excellent performances across the board.
Abilene Christian leads the women’s meet after the second day with a total of 61 points. Angelo State, winner of the last four conference titles, is second with 59 points. The race for third place is also close with Tarleton State (33 points), Incarnate Word (32) and West Texas A&M (27.5) all close.
Texas A&M-Kingsville (17.5) is sixth and is followed by Eastern New Mexico (16), Texas A&M-Commerce (12), Harding (11) and Midwestern State (4).
Day 2 Results: Men | Women
In the men’s meet, Angelo State leads the pack with 63 points. West Texas A&M is second with 44.5 points and Abilene Christian, winner of 19 consecutive conference titles, is in third with 44 points.
Eastern New Mexico (29) is in fourth place and is followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (26), Texas A&M-Commerce (21), Harding (19.5), Incarnate Word (15), and Tarleton State (11).
The women’s heptathlon was the first event of the second day to conclude and it was West Texas A&M’s Morgan Shelton who emerged victorious with 4,986 points. She entered the second day of the event in third place, 158 points behind first, but moved into first place with a strong javelin throw of 131-5. She held off her closest competitors in the 800 meters with a quality time of 2:26.09. Angelo State’s Jordan Gray was second with 4,867 points.
Shalania Lakey gave the ACU women their first win of the day, but it was an impressive one in the hammer throw. She set a new LSC meet record with a toss of 175-9 and teammate Lauren Hartwick was runner-up with a throw of 170-4.
The triple jump featured the top two athletes in all of NCAA Division II in Angelo State’s Kearah Danville and ACU’s Amanda Ouedraogo. This time it was Danville coming out on top with a mark of 42-11 while Ouedraogo was second with a jump of 41-3.
Tiffany Chambers performed a historic feat for Harding by winning the school’s first ever LSC title in any event. She won the pole vault with a clearance of 12-0.
ASU notched their second win of the day when Kimberly Williams won her second straight shot put title with a heave of 45-8.
ACU senior Chloe Susset outkicked West Texas A&M’s Brenda Sindet in an exciting finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Susset finished in a time of 10:54.05 and became the first female athlete to win the LSC steeplechase title four times.
In the final event of the day for the women, ASU’s Emeline Crutcher ran away from the field in the 10,000 meters. She crossed the tape in 36:50.71 giving her back-to-back titles in the event.
In the decathlon, Angelo State’s Seth Pearson led from start to finish and won by over 400 points with 6,638 total points. After winning two events on the first day, he did not win a single event on the second day, but still managed to extend his lead by another 100 points.
Abilene Christian’s Baptiste Kerjean won the men’s hammer throw for the second straight year. He broke his own meet record in the process with a toss of 209-10.
The pole vault was a tightly contested event with three men all clearing 15-7. A&M-Kingsville’s Hayden Woods and West Texas A&M’s Tanner Dennis would go to a jump off to determine the winner and Woods cleared 16-1.25 on his first chance to take the title.
The shot put was another exciting event with ASU’s Sean Reagan holding the lead with a throw of 53-6.5 until West Texas A&M’s Zach Weatherly passed him up on his final throw to win with a mark of 54-2.75.
The final field event of the day may have had the best performance of all when A&M-Kingsville’s C.J. Griggs jumped, leaped and bounded 52-6 on his very first attempt. It would prove to be more than enough for the win and puts him No. 1 on the NCAA DII performance list.
West Texas A&M’s Dylan Doss gave the host another win in the first event on the track. He clocked a 9:21.51 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, giving him back-to-back wins in the event.
The final event of the day was the 10,000 meters and Eastern New Mexico notched a win. Joseph Metcalf held off Tarleton State’s Tye Doty with a winning time of 31:48.27.
The meet concludes on Saturday with the women’s javelin starting at 11 a.m. The first running even will be the 4x100 relay at 5:30 p.m.
