Women’s Basketball postseason awards announced

Angelo State’s Jasmine Prophet was tabbed Player of the Year to headline the Lone Star Conference women’s basketball postseason awards announced Tuesday by league officials.

The awards announcement came Tuesday night at a pre-championship banquet in Allen, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Wednesday.  First-round games will be played Wednesday, March 2, and Thursday, March 3, with the semifinals set for Friday, March 4. Both the women’s and men’s championship games are on Saturday, March 5.

Prophet averages 13.6 points and six rebounds per game while leading the league in field goal percentage (.493).  She has five double-double performances including a season-high 33 points (Feb. 13) and 15 boards (Feb. 6).

Joining Prophet on the All-LSC first team were fellow Rambelle Taylor Dorsey, Texas Woman’s Kenesha Saygo and West Texas A&M’s Sasha Watson and Michaela Neuhaus.

TWU’s Erin Maxwell earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.  She led the league in blocked shots (2.7) and rebounding (7.9).

With Maxwell on the all-defensive team was Pioneer teammate Alexis Nezianya, WT’s Watson and Zantaya Davis, and Texas A&M-Commerce’s Princess Davis.

ASU’s Dorsey was named Newcomer of the Year, while Kevin Baker earned Coach of the Year honors in his first year at the helm.

TWU’s Kara Mitchell earned Freshman of the Year recognition.
Overall, 19 student-athletes were recognized by the all-conference program plus five on the all-defensive team.  The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
