Final Results
West Texas A&M made program history again on Saturday as the top ranked Lady Buffs claimed the first NCAA Division II Indoor Track Field National Championship in program history as they registered 53 total points including a pair of individual National Champions and 10 All-Americans honors at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.
The Lady Buffs used a pair of All-American performances in the 60m Dash as Kennedy Hudson (3rd, 7.41) and Valda Kabia (6th, 7.53) picked up big points while Kabia also picked up All-American honors in the 200m with a time of 24.22 to finish fourth in the event.
Nele Heinrich finished seventh in the 400m with a time of 55.56 for All-American accolades while the women's 4x400m Relay team of Kabia, Heinrich, Madison Thetford and Arlene Crossan capped off the national championship with a time of 3:43.62 to finish third in the final event of the meet. Norma Cunigan finished 13th for the Lady Buffs in the shot put with a throw of 14.29m.
WT's Rellie Kaputin capped off her historic career in Maroon & White with a third place finish in the women's Triple Jump with a mark of 12.73m while teammate Fatim Affessi claimed the National Title in the event with a jump of 13.09m to set a new facility record at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
Kaputin claimed her third individual National Championship as she won the Long Jump with a mark of 2.64m on her second attempt.
The Lady Buffs finished the event with 53 points followed by Western State (40), Lincoln (36), U-Mary (31), Adams State (30), Pittsburg State (30), Angelo State (29), Grand Valley State (25), St. Augustine's (23) and Azusa Pacific (22) to round out the top ten.
ASU claimed a pair of individual titles as Kaitlin Lumpkins won the high jump in a jump off (1.78m), and Kami Norton triumphed in the pentathlon with 3,983 points.
On the men's side, Texas A&M-Commerce finished fifth with 29 points, while WT and Eastern New Mexico tied for 16th (13 points) and Texas A&M-Kingsville was 19th (12 points).
The Lions took home two national titles as DeVontae Steele earned his second national title in the triple jump (16.25m). The A&M-C 4x400m relay of Jude Christine, Dedrian Windham, D’lance Sharp, and Rashard Clark recorded the third-fastest time in Division II history at 3:08.77 to claim gold.
