SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Midwestern State claimed the 2019 Lone Star Conference Men’s Soccer Championship title after upending St. Mary’s for the first time this season 1-0 in San Antonio.
MSU’s (15-4-0) Carlos Flores cleaned up an attempted clearance by St. Mary’s in the 77th minute and buried the opportunity to register the game’s only goal. The junior settled the ball just inside the 18-yard box cut inside and ran the shot past keeper Gerard Roebuck.
The Mustangs came out strong creating the most threatening chances early on including a golden opportunity off of a corner as Dylan Burke headed the ball toward goal before Lewis Wilson saved the attempt off the line. Three minutes later, a shot in the middle of the box was turned aside by a diving save from Roebuck.
On the other end, StMU missed an opportunity to go ahead when freshman Edu Toiny-Pendred could not put a centering ball past MSU goalkeeper Taylor Lampe.
Throughout the second half, the Mustangs and Rattlers traded opportunities on which neither could capitalize until Flores’ winner late on.
The MSU defense allowed just five total shots to the Rattlers including three on goal holding StMU to its lowest shot total this season. On the offensive end, the Mustangs put together 19 shots, only four of which found the target.
With the win, the Mustangs have claimed the LSC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship. The complete field will be announced on Monday, November 18 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
