LSC announces annual men’s basketball awards

West Texas A&M’s Ryan Quaid was named Player of the Year to headline the Lone Star Conference men’s basketball postseason awards announced Wednesday by league officials.
      The awards announcement came Wednesday night at the championship banquet at Main Event in Frisco, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Thursday.  The men’s first-round games will be played Thursday, March 7, with the semifinals set for Saturday, March 9. Both the women’s and men’s championship games are on Sunday, March 10.
      Joining Quaid on the first team was Buff teammate Qua Grant, Tarleton State’s Josh Hawley, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Willie Rooks, and UT Permian Basin’s Jacob Ledoux.
      Defensive Player of the Year recognition went to the Tarleton’s Hawley. On the all-defensive team with Hawley was Angelo State’s James Kirksey, Eastern New Mexico’s Chukuka Emili, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Robert Stevenson, and WT’s Joel Murray.
      Additional special awards announced included newcomer, freshman and coach of the year.
      The Buffs Grant was tabbed Freshman of the Year, while Tom Brown earned Coach of the Year recognition for the second consecutive year.
      UTPB’s Ledoux was tabbed Newcomer of the Year.
      Overall, 25 student-athletes were recognized by the all-conference program plus five on the all-defensive team.  The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
