Outdoor Track and Field: Five claim weekly awards

LSC OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field athletes have recorded 13 NCAA Division II Automatic qualifying marks (10 men, 3 women) and 114 provisional efforts (60 men, 54 women).  See the LSC performance list here: https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2628.html.

        The 2019 LSC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico on May 2-3-4.

 

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MEN’S TRACK

Valentin Charles, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, JR, Interdisciplinary Studies, Rennes, France, Lyceé Sévigné

In only his first decathlon competition of the year, Charles outpace the rest of the competition as he posted an NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark with a point total of 7375. The freshman from Rennes, France, had six separate top-two finishes at the David Noble Relays to claim the top spot on the podium, four of which added in excess of 800 points to his total. Charles finished second in the 100m at 10.88 for 888 points, second in the long jump at 23-9.50 (7.25m) for 874 points, second in the 400m at 49.25 for 849 points and outran the opposition in the 100m hurdles at 14.77 to finish first in the event with 878 points. On the year, Charles currently tops the NCAA Descending Order List in the decathlon as he is 56 points ahead of the second spot.

 

CO-MEN’S FIELD

Decio Andrade, Angelo State University, FR, Undeclared, Camacha, Portugal

Andrade had an outstanding weekend at the David Noble Relays. He won the hammer throw with a meet, facility, and Lone Star Conference all-time record of 231-0 (70.42 meters). The throw is the sixth best mark in NCAA Division II history and ranks top ten across all NCAA divisions this season.

 

Josh Boateng, Texas A&M University-Commerce, JR, Learning & Technology, St. George's, Grenada

In the men's discus throw at the Angelo State David Noble Relays, Boateng continued to improve on his Division II-best mark, winning the event at 194-9 (59.37 meters). His launch breaks the Grenadian national record by 2.45 meters. The previous record of his home nation had been set in 2004.

 

WOMEN’S TRACK

4x100 relay (Kaitlyn Mathews, Hannah Porter, Sarah Porter, Tare' Ward), Angelo State University

The team of Kaitlyn Mathews, Hannah Porter, Sarah Porter, and Tare' Ward finished second in the 4x100 meter relay at the David Noble Relays. Their time of 45.88 seconds is a season best, ranks fourth in Division II and provisionally qualifies them for the DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

 

WOMEN’S FIELD

Fatim Affessi, West Texas A&M University, JR, Psychology, Geneva, Switzerland, University of Geneva

The junior now sits alone atop the national rankings in the long jump following her performance at the West Texas A&M Classic & Multi on Friday. The Geneva, Switzerland native was one of three competitors to jump over 6 meters as she finished second with a leap of 20-2.5 (6.16m).
