Eastern New Mexico’s Ezra Bagwell and Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Racheal Somoye were tabbed Lone Star Conference Academic Athletes of the Year on Wednesday when league officials announced the LSC’s annual academic awards for men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.
Bagwell, who was also the 2019 LSC Indoor Track and Field Academic Athlete of the Year, earned the men’s highest academic honor, while Somoye earned the women’s top honor.
The Greyhounds Bagwell led a group of 11 track and field stars on the LSC Men’s All-Academic Team, while the Javelinas Somoye headlined 11 standouts on the LSC Women’s All-Academic Team.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting based on both academic and athletic achievement.
On the men’s all-academic team with Bagwell was Angelo State’s Harry Maslen; Cameron’s Steffen Riestenpatt; DBU’s Trent Phelps; Lubbock Christian’s Jacob Nava and Josh Ybarra; Texas A&M-Commerce’s Trevor Montgomery; Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Lane Michna; and West Texas A&M’s Giovanni Pieters and Briggs Wittlake.
Bagwell becomes a three-time honoree, while Maslen and Nava are repeat selections.
Joining Somoye on the women’s side was teammate Madeleine Maltais; ASU’s Jordan Nash and Taylor Hall; DBU’s Leah Lewis and Micaela Lamb; ENMU’s Caroline Bachman; Midwestern State’s Mercy Yermo; Tarleton’s Gretzel Jimenez; A&M-C’s Maggie Waites; and WT’s Fatim Affessi
Nash, Yermo, Jimenez, Maltais, and Affessi claimed a spot on the all-academic team for the second straight year.
Overall, 22 men and women were selected to the All-Academic teams.
