Football: MSU’s Johnson, UTPB’s Hoad earn preseason acclaim

Midwestern State’s Juwan Johnson and UT Permian Basin’s Chris Hoad were selected as the Lone Star Conference Football Preseason Players of the Year for 2019 league officials announced Monday.

MSU’s Johnson picked up Offensive Player of the Year recognition, while UTPB’s Hoad earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The league’s preseason awards were selected by a vote of LSC head coaches and sports information directors, plus various media representatives from throughout the region.

Johnson, a 5-10 junior wide receiver from Springfield, Missouri, set a MSU single season record with 1,215 yards on 67 catches to earn LSC Receiver of the Year honors last season.  Johnson collected 100 receiving yards in seven consecutive games and accounted for at least 90 yards in each of MSU Texas' 10 games to rank fifth in Division II in receiving yards per game (121.5).

With 12 votes, Johnson was the top choice in front of six others who received votes.

Hoad, a 6-0, senior linebacker from Leander, Texas, claimed LSC Linebacker of the Year honors last year after ranking third in Division II with 133 tackles.  He added 6.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery for the Falcons.

Hoad received eight votes for preseason acclaim over 10 others that collected votes.
