West Texas A&M’s Nicolai Hartling and Angelo State’s Mia van Oudtshoorn were named the Lone Star Conference Academic Athletes of the Year on Wednesday when league officials announced the LSC's annual academic awards for men's and women's indoor track and field.
Hartling topped a group of 11 standouts on the LSC Men’s All-Academic team, while van Oudtshoorn highlighted 11 standouts on the LSC Women’s All-Academic team.
A senior communications major form Copenhagen, Denmark, Hartling was named to the LSC academic team. He ranks in the top 25 in the LSC in the 200- and 400-meters.
van Oudtshoorn, a junior chemistry major from Roodskool, Kroonstad, South Africa, was recognized on the academic squad for the second time. She ranks fourth in the league in the shot put.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Athlete of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
Joining Hartling on the men's all-academic team was Angelo State’s Levi Britting; Cameron’s Steffen Riestenpatt; DBU’s Trent Phelps, Noah Metzger, and Jared Gilley; Eastern New Mexico’s Ivar Moinat; Lubbock Christian’s Keynan Abdi; Oklahoma Christian’s Colton Meyers; Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Danree Delancy; and UT Tyler’s Zach Tucker.
On the women's team with van Oudtshoorn was DBU’s Leah Lewis and Leslie Filorio; ENMU’s Caroline Bachman; OC’s Kelsey Castillo and Ivy Lobley; A&M-C’s Minna Svaerd; TAMUK’s Sophie Morrow; UT Tyler’s Summer Grubbs; and WT’s Nele Heinrich and Madison Thetford.
Overall, 22 men and women were selected to the All-Academic teams including four repeat selections - van Oudtshoorn, Lewis, Thetford, and Heinrich.
