LSC Baseball Weekly Release - Week 2

In a week marked by a slew of postponements and cancelations due to the Winter storms in cities across the league, two Lone Star Conference baseball teams put together undefeated weeks as No. 10 UT Tyler and No. 22 West Texas A&M picked up series sweeps in conference play.

LSC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The LSC Baseball Championship will be a two-week tournament featuring eight teams with the opening round on campus. The winners of each opening round series will advance to a double-elimination tournament played the following weekend. The winner of the postseason tournament will be recognized as the LSC Tournament Champion and receive the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA postseason.

Ryan Johnson, West Texas A&M, SO, Biology, OF, Albuquerque, N.M., La Cueva HS

Ryan Johnson led the way offensively for the No. 22 Buffaloes this past weekend as they picked up a pair of Lone Star Conference wins over Eastern New Mexico at Wilder Park in Canyon. The Albuquerque product hit .714 in the doubleheader with five hits in seven at-bats, scoring three runs with a pair of triples in back-to-back innings and drove in two RBI while slugging 1.286. The sophomore also drew two walks for an on-base clip of .778 in a pair of run-rule victories to open LSC play for the Buffs.

Mathieu Gauthier, West Texas A&M, SR, Finance, RHP, Montreal, Quebec, Lower Canada College

Mathieu Gauthier was dominant on the mound for the No. 22 Buffaloes this past week as the senior finished off a Lone Star Conference doubleheader sweep of Eastern New Mexico at Wilder Park in Canyon. The Montreal, Quebec native tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with one walk and a career-high 10 strikeouts for an opposing batting average of .105. The senior has now registered 52 career strikeouts in his nine appearances for West Texas A&M for an opposing batting average of .226.

SELECTED NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
       Riley Jepson, UT Tyler, hit .375 for the weekend in the Patriot's sweep of Texas A&M International, totaling seven RBI's throughout the three games. The senior hit a grand slam in the top of the second inning to spearhead a 13-3 Patriot run-rule in seven innings in the third and final game of the series. Jepson totaled five RBI's and a run in that third game alone. He also drew five walks over the weekend to finish with a .571 on-base percentage. The senior currently ranks in a tie for first in the Lone Star Conference with two home runs and ranks second in the league with nine RBI's in six games played.
