West Texas A&M took home both the men’s and women’s titles for the third time at the 2021 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lubbock, Texas.
The Lady Buffs claimed their eighth consecutive women’s title, while the Buffs won their third crown.
WT took the women’s title with 234.5 points. ASU finished second with 104.5 points and Texas A&M-Commerce was third (89).
The Lady Buffs reigned in six events on Sunday. WT was led by Florance Uwajeneza with a double-gold performance in the mile and 3,000-meters to finish with a meet-high 32.50 points. Zada Swoopes added 10 points with her LSC record effort in the shot put (53-6.25, 16.31m), while Leah Belfield repeated as 60 meters champion. Taylor Nelloms (triple jump) and Raquel Chavez (800m) added titles for the Lady Buffs.

Minna Sveard led the TAMUC charge by winning her fourth consecutive pole vault title and her third straight 400 meter crown. In the pole vault, she broke her own LSC Championships record (12-7.25, 3.84m). The Lions posted the top time in the 4x400 relay by Dejanee Washington, Danielle Nicholson, Atiana Alexander and Sveard.
UT Tyler’s Summer Grubbs won both the 60-meter hurdles and 200 meters.

On the men’s side, WT finished with 198 points to win its third title and top TAMUC (118) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (109.5), who finished second and third, respectively.
The Buffs prevailed in six events on day two with double-winner Benjamin Azamati, who posted a pair of the LSC record breaking performances. Azamati set the LSC all-time and championships mark in the 200-meters (20.97) and repeated in the 60-meters with a championship record time (6.61). Ezekiel Kipchirchir (3,000-meters) Peniel Richard (triple jump) and Butare Rugenerwa (mile) each earned their second gold of the event, while Jahmaal Wilson finished first in the 60-meter hurdles.
The Lions quartet of Gage Marshall, Ian Colbert, Conner Stockerl and Lamarion Arnold finished first in the 4x400 relay.
TAMUK ’s Johnathon Harper won the heptathlon en route to a meet-best 22 points. Ayman Zahafi added his second career 800-meters crown, while Taylor Chaney finished first in the 400-meters and Marco Arevalo won the shot put for the Javelinas.
The NCAA Division II Indoor Championships are March 11-13 in Birmingham, Alabama. The championship fields will be announced on March 2.
