LSC Baseball Weekly Release - Week 7

Five Lone Star Conference baseball teams were undefeated in conference play last week as No. 1 Angelo State, No. 10 West Texas A&M, No. 24 UT Tyler, UAFS and UT Permian Basin all picked up series sweeps. St. Mary’s and Texas A&M-Kingsville each won two of their three conference games over the weekend.

LSC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The LSC Baseball Championship will be a two-week tournament featuring eight teams with the opening round on campus. The winners of each opening round series will advance to a double-elimination tournament played the following weekend. The winner of the postseason tournament will be recognized as the LSC Tournament Champion and receive the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA postseason.

Josh Elvir, Angelo State, SR, Interdisciplinary Studies, OF, Kemah, Texas, Clear Falls HS
Josh Elvir led the Rams to a series sweep of the Texas A&M International batting .714 with eight RBI over the three-game set. The senior hit a grand slam and went a perfect 6-for-6 in the final game of the series. Elvir also scored eight runs during the week and picked up a walk and a stolen base. He currently leads the LSC in several categories including batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and runs scored.

Trent Baker, Angelo State, JR, Management Information Systems, RHP, Georgetown, Texas, Georgetown, Texas

Trent Baker lifted the top-ranked Rams to a series-opening win over Texas A&M International on Friday, tossing a complete-game shutout while striking out eight Dustdevil batters. The junior scattered just five hits across eight innings holding TAMIU to a .172 batting average. He earned his conference co-leading fifth win of the season in the game.

SELECTED NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
       Kyler Bumstead, UT Tyler, led the team with a .667 average for the weekend in the Patriot's sweep of Cameron. Bumstead went 6-for-9 from the plate between the three games, recording four RBI. He scored twice throughout the weekend and homered in game number two. He posted a 4-for-4 effort in that 12-2 win for the Patriots, scoring both of his runs for the weekend in that contest and recording two of his four RBI. He recorded a hit in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader as well as Friday night's 6-3 win.
 
       Jake Hahn, St. Edward’s, was outstanding at the plate this weekend for SEU, going 8-for-12 with no strikeouts and two walks, only not reaching safely in two attempts. He also drove in three runs as St. Edward's went 1-2 at St. Mary's over the weekend.
 
       Caden Hensely, Lubbock Christian, was a spark plug for the Chap offense against Texas A&M-Kingsville while batting in the No. 8 spot all weekend. He hit .455 across the three games with a double and a triple while playing perfect defense at second base in 18 chances. He drove in two runs and scored twice, accounting for four of the 16 runs LCU scored on the weekend all by himself. The Lubbock native also added in a walk and his first stolen base of the year.
      
      Brandon Broughton, St. Mary’s, hit the game-winning double in the second game of the series against St. Edward's, blasting a line drive down the left-field line to score two in the bottom of the seventh to give the Rattlers the 4-2 lead and they went on to win 4-3. He reached base in 9 of his 13 plate appearances and stole his first base of the season. The sophomore transfer also had 25 chances at first base without recording an error with 22 putouts and three assists. Broughton also extended his hitting streak to six-straight with at least one in all three games.
 
      Ryan Johnson, West Texas A&M, continued his hot start to the 2021 season this past weekend as the sophomore led the #10 Buffaloes to a three-game sweep on the road at Oklahoma Christian, running WT's win streak to eight games as they remained atop of the LSC standings. The Albuquerque, New Mexico product hit .500 on the weekend with three runs scored and six hits in his 12 at-bats, the La Cueva High School grad registered four doubles and a triple to drive in five RBI with 12 total bases for a slugging percentage of 1.000. Johnson walked once and didn't strike out in three games for an on-base clip of .500.
 
      Blake Holub, St. Edward's, earned the only win on the mound this weekend against St. Mary's, scattering five hits in six innings of work and allowing just one earned run while holding the Rattlers to a .217 hitting percentage in a 10-1 SEU win.
 
      Chris Rodriguez, West Texas A&M, continued to dominate on the mound for the No. 10 Buffs this past weekend as WT ran their win streak to eight games with a Lone Star Conference road sweep of Oklahoma Christian at Dobson Field in Edmond. The El Paso, Texas product entered Friday night's opener with a three-run lead and the sophomore did his just with a pair of scoreless frames, allowing no runs on no hits with no walks and three strikeouts to pick up his third save of the season in the win.
 
      Nick Niebur, UT Tyler, struck out nine in his 5.0 innings of work in Saturday's game two 13-1 win for UT Tyler over Cameron. Niebur picked up the win after allowing just one earned one in the first inning and then worked through the rest of his five innings by allowing just two more base runners for the Aggies. He conceded just three hits for the game and walked just a single batter.
