LSC Outdoor Track and Field Weekly Release - Week 6

Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field athletes have recorded 18 NCAA Division II Automatic qualifying marks (12 men, 6 women) and 122 provisional efforts (72 men, 50 women).  See the LSC performance list here:

      The 2021 LSC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas on May 6-7-8.
 
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN’S TRACK
Verrell McBride, Oklahoma Christian, JR, General Business, Norman, Okla., Norman North HS
McBride won the 200 meters while posting a Division II provisional qualifying time at the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla. On a cool day with overcast skies and temperatures in the 50s, McBride beat six NCAA Division I runners while winning the 200 in a career-best time of 21.19 seconds, which ranks as the 13th-best time this season in Division II and the second-fastest this season by a LSC sprinter. McBride also finished fifth in the 100-meter final in 10.87 seconds, beating a pair of Division I runners and finishing behind only three runners from OU and a non-collegiate runner. He had posted a career-best 100 time of 10.72 in the preliminary round.
 
MEN’S FIELD
Johnathon Harper, Texas A&M-Kingsville, SR, Mechanical Engineering, Lorena, Texas, Lorena HS
Harper posted the fourth-best score in the nation in the decathlon at the Cactus Cup as he took the event crown at 7196 for an NCAA Provisional Qualifying score. The senior from Lorena, Texas, post 800+ points in five of the 10 events, including 901 in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.58. He added 883 points in the 100m after clocking in at 10.90, tacked on 859 in the long jump with a leap of 23-7.25 (7.19m), finished with 813 in the 400m after crossing the tape in 50.03, and added the final mark of 819 in the pole vault with a height of 15-5 (4.70m).
 
WOMEN’S TRACK
Kelsey Castillo, Oklahoma Christian, SR, Nursing, Edmond, Okla., Edmond North HS
In her first 5,000-meter race on the track, Castillo dueled throughout with a University of Oklahoma runner before finishing a close second in the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla. Castillo’s time of 17:43.15 was the fourth-fastest this season by a LSC runner and almost 50 seconds faster than she’d ever recorded in any of her 5,000-meter collegiate cross country races.
 
WOMEN’S FIELD
Sara Ramos, Angelo State, JR, Kinesiology, Uvalde, Texas, Uvalde HS
Ramos made history for Angelo State hitting a personal best throw in the hammer throw of 185-0 (56.38m), to take first in the Cactus Cup meet with a provisional mark. She broke the ASU women's hammer throw record (184-4) by eight inches with her throw.

SELECTED NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
   Shaun Gill, Texas A&M-Kingsville, turned in a provisional qualifying mark in the 100m over the weekend at the Cactus Cup. The sophomore from Belize posted a time of 10.55, 20th-fastest in the nation on the year, to finish first in the event as the Javelinas took second overall at their home event.
   Cason Brown, Angelo State, hit another provisional mark in the Cactus Cup meet for Angelo State in the discus throw after he placed first with a throw of 173-6 (52.89m). Brown is currently ranked second in the conference and eighth in Division II.
