PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTER
Josh Elvir, Angelo State, SR, Interdisciplinary Studies, OF, Kemah, Texas, Clear Falls HS
Josh Elvir led the 11th-ranked Rams to a series sweep over St. Edward’s with an impressive offensive showing. The senior racked up a .636 batting average with seven hits, three of which were home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored in the three-game set. Elvir also reached base at a .692 clip thanks to a pair of walks and slugged 1.545 over the weekend. PITCHER
Logan Garza, Texas A&M-Kingsville, JR, Kinesiology, LHP, Round Rock, Texas, Stony Point HS
Logan Garza mystified the No. 24 UT Tyler lineup in Friday's 1-0 win as he became the first Javelina pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete-game shutout in three years. The junior left-handed pitcher scattered three hits over his nine-inning outing and struck out 12 Patriot batters en route to his second win of the season. Garza also surrendered just three walks and got some defensive help along the way with a 9-3-2 relay to home in the sixth inning that kept UTT off the scoreboard. It was the first nine-inning shutout thrown by a TAMUK pitcher since February 2018 and was the third time this season Garza recorded at least 12 strikeouts in a start. Garza lowered his season ERA to 3.73 and improved his team-high strikeouts to 66 which ranks second in the league.

SELECTED NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Michael DiFiore, Oklahoma Christian, who LSC’s leader in home runs and RBIs, hit four more homers as OC came from behind in all three games for a series sweep of Cameron. In the opener, a 14-10 win, he recorded the first three-homer game by an OC baseball player since the program was revived in 2008 and the first this season by an LSC player, finishing 3 for 5 with six RBIs and three runs scored, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning, a three-run homer in the sixth and a solo homer during a six-run eighth inning. He drove in OC’s first run in the second game, a 7-6 win, after the Eagles had fallen behind early. In the series finale, OC trailed 7-1 but DiFiore's solo home run in a three-run fifth inning pulled the Eagles within 8-5 and he drew a bases-loaded walk during a seven-run seventh-inning outburst that put OC ahead 10-9. In addition to the two home runs, he reached base twice on walks and twice was hit by pitches, giving him a healthy .533 on-base percentage. With 12 homers this season, he already ranks sixth on OC’s single-season list in that statistical category.
Will Fuenning, West Texas A&M, led the way offensively for the No. 6 Buffaloes as they ran their win streak to a program-record 14 games with an LSC road sweep of Lubbock Christian at Hays Field. The Scottsdale, Arizona product hit .615 on the weekend with five runs scored and eight hits during his 13 at-bats, registering three doubles and a homer to drive in five RBI with 14 total bases for a slugging percentage of 1.077 while walking twice for an on-base clip of .667. Fuenning also tallied five putouts in the outfield for a perfect fielding percentage.
Jayce Clem, Cameron, did his job in a three-game series against Oklahoma Christian last weekend. The second-year player clobbered four homers and slugged 1.429 against the Eagles. Clem recorded at least two hits and one homer in all three games of the series. He opened the set with a two-homer game and then added two hits and a solo shot in the second game of the doubleheader. Clem closed the weekend with a three-hit performance with a homer and an RBI double. His performance has put him in second in the league in hitting (.405) and third in slugging (.774).
Fernando Zubia, St. Mary's, hit a team-best .500 with at least one hit in each one of his three games. In the Rattlers' 21-3 victory, he went 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBI and hit two doubles. For the week, three of his six hits were doubles and he ended with seven RBI. The senior also scored five runs in the series.
Dylan Hurt, UAFS, extended his hitting streak to 10 games by hitting for a weekend cycle, collecting two singles, a double, triple and home run in a series win over UTPB. He went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored in a 9-1 win, then posted a bases-clearing triple, four RBIs and scored two runs in a record-setting 25-3 win. He also walked once and was hit by a pitch in the win. In the series finale, Hurt went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBIs and two runs. The homer was the second of his career.
Carter Brown, Carter Brown, was dominant out of the bullpen for the No. 6 Buffs this past weekend as they set a new program record with their 14th consecutive victory in a Lone Star Conference weekend sweep of Lubbock Christian at Hays Field. The Bentonville, Arkansas product allowed no runs on no hits with two walks and an incredible eight strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of work spread out over two relief appearances as the senior picked up two saves in the sweep. Brown retired the final five batters of Friday afternoon's game followed by a great outing in Saturday's finale as he entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, a walk cut the lead to one run before a big strikeout stranded three Chaps. Brown would close out the game with two more strikeouts in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Noah Bates, Oklahoma Christian, closed out two of Oklahoma Christian’s wins in its series sweep of Cameron. In the opener, a 14-10 win, he entered to start the ninth inning, after OC had just scored six runs to take the lead and pitched a scoreless frame with three strikeouts. In the finale, a 12-9 win, he also pitched a scoreless ninth inning – no mean feat in a game in which Cameron hit five home runs – and recorded his third save of the season.
Karlo Kalifa, St. Mary’s, in his first career start, did not allow an earned run in 6.2 innings of work. He didn't walk a single batter and struck out four in a no-decision. Kalifa threw a career-high 93 pitches and allowed only one extra-base hit (a double) amongst the nine hits.
Trent Baker, Angelo State, picked up his seventh win of the season to remain undefeated after allowing only two runs through six innings of work while striking out eight batters. He is third in the conference in ERA at 2.12 and is fourth in strikeouts with 55. His 7-0 record is tied for most wins on the season, and the highest win total without a loss.
