Angelo State earned its fourth Lone Star Conference Baseball Tournament Championship with a 10-3 win over Lubbock Christian on Saturday in San Angelo, Texas.
The Rams, who claimed their first tournament title since 2015, erupted offensively in the sixth inning to score seven runs which proved to be the difference in the game. Trailing 3-2, ASU started a two-out rally with a runner on first when Parker Bramlett and Reese Johnson drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.
Jackson Hardy brought in a run on a walk and Josh Elvir hit an RBI single that brought home two runs on an error which gave ASU its first lead of the game. Aaron Walters blew the game open in the next at-bat with an RBI single that scored two more runners and gave the Rams a 7-3 lead.
Mat Szabo came up big on the mound after surrendering two runs in the first inning of the game. The ASU right-hander allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five Chaparral batters in his five innings of work. Aaron Munson picked up the win in relief allowing two hits while striking out four in three innings.
Walters was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and was one of six Rams to make the LSC Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team. He was joined by teammates Szabo, Bramlett, Hardy, Elvir and Trent Baker.
The field for the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship will be announced on Sunday, May 23 via an online show at NCAA.com starting at 9 p.m. CT.
