Eastern New Mexico’s Hunter St. John was named the 2022 Lone Star Conference Football Academic Player of the Year as the conference released the league’s academic awards on Thursday.
St. John headlined a group of 11 standout student-athletes recognized for their work in the classroom and on the court. A junior left tackle from Clovis, New Mexico, St. John is the fifth Greyhound to claim the league’s top academic honor with a perfect GPA as a business major.
West Texas A&M led the selections with three All-Academic honorees, while Angelo State and Western New Mexico each added two honorees. ENMU, Texas A&M-Kingsville, UT Permian Basin, and Western Oregon each had one recognized.
Joining St. John on the All-Academic Team was ASU’s Cason Brown and Kason Philips; TAMUK’s Jacob Cavazos; UTPB’s Brock Johnson; WT’s Nick Gerber, Noah Bogardus, and Preston Steszewski; WNMU’s Allen Ortiz and Devin Larsen; and WOU’s Keating Hinkley.
Gerber was recognized for the second straight year.
The All-Academic team is selected by the league’s sports information directors, who select players based on both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for their entire collegiate career.
