LSC Indoor Track and Field Championships: WT sweeps titles again

LUBBOCK, Texas – West Texas A&M captured both the men’s and women’s titles for the second straight year and fourth time overall at the 2022 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lubbock, Texas.
 
      The Lady Buffs claimed their ninth consecutive women’s title, while the Buffs won their fourth crown.  WT has swept the titles in 2014, 2019, 2021, and 2022.
 
      WT took the women’s title with 215.5 points.  Angelo State finished second with 115.5 points and Texas A&M-Commerce was third (76.33).
 
      The Lady Buffs prevailed in five events on Saturday.  WT was led by Leah Belfield with a double-gold effort in the 60- and 200-meters.  Zada Swoopes reigned in the shot put with her fourth straight title and championship record, while Eleonora Curtabbi added 10 more points in the 3,000-meters for her second win of the championship.  Taylor Nelloms picked up her second straight victory in the triple jump en route to 24 points overall.
 
      ASU’s Antonija Radic, who scored a meet-best 28 points, won her second title of the championship and second straight gold in the high jump.  Maricia Spence finished first in the 60-meter hurdles to earn her second championships gold.
 
      Minna Sveard led TAMUC by winning her fourth straight 400-meter crown with a time of 54.30 to set the LSC best-ever and championship marks.  The Lions repeated in the 4x400 relay with the quartet of Sofia Khenfar, Francesca Aquillino, Mariana Shostak, and Minna Sveard.
 
      DBU’s Madison Brown triumphed in the mile, while Eastern New Mexico’s Malethabo Seema finished first in the 800-meters.
 
      On the men’s side, WT finished with 206 points for the crown. TAMUC (120) and ASU (85) finished second and third, respectively.
 
      The Buffs conquered in six events on day two with double-winner Benjamin Azamati, who posted a pair of the LSC record breaking performances once again and tied for a meet-high 20 points.  Azamati set the LSC best-ever and championships mark in the 200-meters (20.57) for the second straight year.  He also claimed gold for the third time in the 60-meters with a championship record time (6.55).
 
      WT’s Butare Rugenerwa repeated in the mile, while Tyrin Lewis took home gold in the 60m hurdles with a championship record mark (7.78), and Innocent Murwanashyaka added 10 points in the 3,000-meters.  The Buffs foursome of Jeremiah Lauzon, Ohdel James, Malick Diop, and Quinton Sansing finished first in the 4x400 relay.

      The Lions Trayveon Franklin claimed the triple jump crown.
 
      Emmett Seals (400-meters) and Elvis Kryukov (heptathlon) won titles for the Rams.
 
      Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Danree Delancy finished first in the shot put, while DBU’s Jared Gilley was the 800-meter champion.
 
      The NCAA Division II Indoor Championships are March 11-12 in Pittsburg, Kansas. The selections will be announced on March 1.
