LSC women’s basketball postseason honors revealed

Texas A&M-Commerce’s Dyani Robinson was named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year in women’s basketball to lead the league’s postseason awards announced on Wednesday.

Robinson’s recognition as the league’s top player marked the first time student-athlete from TAMUC has won the award since LSC Hall of Honor member Britney Jordan in 2009.

The awards announcement came at the annual championship banquet at Main Event in Frisco, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Thursday at Comerica Center.  The women’s quarterfinal games will be played Friday, March 4, with the semifinals set for Saturday, March 5. Both the women’s and men’s championship games are on Sunday, March 6.

Joining Robinson on the first team are Angelo State’s Sawyer Lloyd, Cameron’s Maighan Hedge, Lubbock Christian’s Allie Schulte, St. Mary’s Hannah Wilson, Texas A&M International’s Raiana Brown, Texas Woman’s Ashley Ingram and UT Tyler’s Liah Davis.

CU standout Stephanie Peterson was named the LSC’s Defensive Player of the Year, claiming the top honor on the all-defensive team. The junior guard was joined by ASU’s Payton Brown, LCU’s Juliana Robertson, StMU’s Wilson and West Texas A&M’s Karley Motschenbacher.

UTT graduate student Liah Davis was rewarded with Newcomer of the Year honors, and TAMUC’s Laila Lawrence earned Sixth Woman of the Year acclaim. TWU head coach Beth Jillson was recognized as the Noel Johnson Coach of the Year for the first time.

The Pioneers’ Ashley Ingram garnered Freshman of the Year plaudits and was accompanied on the all-freshman team by LCU’s Grace Foster, Texas A&M International’s Evelyn Quiroz, TAMUC’s Lawrence and UT Tyler’s Lovisa Hevinder.

Overall, 38 student-athletes were distinguished by the all-conference program plus five on the all-defensive and all-freshman teams.  The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
