LSC Baseball Weekly Release - Week 7

Five Lone Star Conference teams picked up series wins last week, headlined by No. 17 Angelo State’s and UT Tyler’s four-game sweeps over the weekend. No. 4 West Texas A&M, No. 24 Lubbock Christian and St. Mary’s all picked up three league wins in four games. WT continued its position atop the league standings at 20-4, followed by Angelo State at 19-5 and Lubbock Christian at 18-6.
 
    LSC baseball teams are playing a single round-robin conference schedule with a four-game series against each league opponent (48 total LSC games).
 
    LSC teams are 5-1 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition in the NCAA Division II South Central Region.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTER
Jake Mares, St. Mary's, SR, Mathematics, SS, Fort Worth, Texas, All Saints Episcopal

Mares had four multi-hit games in the four-game series as the Rattlers took three from St. Edward's in Austin. The senior scored the winning run in the 6-5 extra-inning game three after singling to right-center and scoring from first on a double. He's now had multiple hits in each of his last seven games, raising his season average to .396. In the Rattlers' 18-8 game two victory, Mares tied his season high with three RBI and was on base four times, going 2-for-4 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. The senior scored at least one run in each game of the series and stole a pair of bases. Mares was 11-for-19 (.579) from the plate, scored six runs, brough in four RBI with a pair of walks during the week.

PITCHER
Aaron Munson, Angelo State, SO, Business Management, RHP, San Antonio, Texas, Johnson HS

Munson put together one of the best pitching performances of his career, throwing eight scoreless innings while allowing only one hit and one walk in the Rams' 6-0 extra-inning win over Texas A&M International. The sophomore retired the first 10 batters he faced and did not surrender a hit until the eighth inning, keeping the Dustdevils off the scoreboard in a game that was tied 0-0 heading into then ninth. Munson also recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts, matching the most by an LSC pitcher this season, while holding the Dustdevils to a batting average of .036.

SELECTED NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Spencer Roach, Eastern New Mexico, posted another excellent weekend at the plate hitting .571, recording eight hits and eight RBIs in a 2-2 series split with UAFS. The Cape Coral, Florida, native held an on-base percentage of .647 and a slugging percentage of .643. Roach went 3-3 with 5 RBIs during the Greyhound's 10-0 win over UAFS in eight innings. Roach reached base in every plate appearance posting two singles, a double, and two walks and set an ENMU single-game high for RBIs this season. Roach is currently on a 12 game hitting streak and has recorded 21 hits in those 12 games.
 
    Carson Ogilvie, Lubbock Christian, had a strong weekend at the plate, batting .333 with a team-leading .583 slugging percentage. Three of his four hits in a series win at Texas A&M-Kingsville went for extra bases, and the Chap shortstop walked three times as well for a .467 on-base percentage.
 
    Kyle McShaffry, UT Tyler, stepped up big for UT Tyler and helped lead to the first series sweep of the season for the Patriots. In the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, McShaffry delivered a 3-for-5 performance with a pair of RBI's and a pair of runs scored. In the series finale on Sunday, he came up even bigger, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBI's. In that contest, McShaffry struck the final blow against Cameron as he hit his second grand slam of the season in the top of the ninth to finally put the Patriots out of reach. For the series, McShaffry went 8-for-18 with nine total RBI's and an average of .444.
 
    Giancarlo Servin, Texas A&M-Kingsville, had a solid weekend at the plate, knocking five hits, including two doubles and a home run against Lubbock Christian. He maintained a .417 batting average while slugging .917 against the Chaps, working three walks. The senior from Edinburgh earned two RBIs and scored three runs as he led TAMUK at the plate throughout the series.
 
    Ethan Coombes, Lubbock Christian, threw the first complete-game shutout by a Chap pitcher this season in a road matchup with Texas A&M-Kingsville. The right-hander tossed 103 pitches in a 2-0 win over the Javelinas, allowing just four hits and striking out four. Texas A&M-Kingsville never had more than one runner on the bases at once, and no Javelinas made it beyond second base as Coombes improved to 3-1 on the year.
 
    Noah De La Riva, Eastern New Mexico, delivered a complete game shutout for Eastern New Mexico during its 10-0 win over UAFS in eight innings over the weekend. The El Paso, Texas native provided the first shutout for the Greyhounds since 2019 and helped the Greyhounds go 2-2 over the weekend. De La Riva finished the game with no runs allowed, surrendering just six hits while tying a career-best with six K's. The 8.0 innings ties the longest outing for the freshman and his first career complete game.
 
    Connor Schmidt, St. Mary’s, kept Hilltopper hitters off balance all day, allowing them to hit just .095 against him in six innings. The Rattlers won the game 5-3, where he earned a no decision after surrendering zero earned runs. Schmidt recently moved back into the starting lineup after starting the season as the team's closer and the six innings is the longest outing of the year for the senior. He's had multiple strikeouts in all nine appearances, including four on Friday.
 
    Dylan Blomquist, UT Tyler, stepped up and delivered yet another gem on the mound on Friday afternoon as he collected his fourth win of the season against Cameron. Blomquist pitched 6.1 innings on the day and allowed just one earned run while spreading out five hits. He also struck out nine hitters which more than doubles his previous season high. On Saturday, the freshman from Belton, Texas stepped up in both games of the doubleheader in a pinch hit role and doubled in both at-bats while also driving in his first run of the season.
 
    Brandon Symmank, Texas A&M-Kingsville, kept the top slugging team in the Lone Star Conference at bay to earn his fourth win of the season on Saturday. The redshirt senior tossed seven innings of four-hit baseball while striking out 11 of the 29 Lubbock Christian batters he faced. The Cypress, Texas native continues to lead the Lone Star Conference in ERA at 1.97, opponent batting average at .178, and batters struck out looking with 18. Additionally, his11 strikeouts and seven innings pitched against the Chaps represent new career-bests.
