Midwestern State’s Alex Martinez Roca was named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year as the league announced its annual men’s tennis awards on Wednesday.
Martinez Roca led nine student-athletes who received first-team recognition, including teammate Ben Westwick, Cameron duo Tomas Almeida and Thomas Cardona, UT Tyler’s Joaquin Bianchi, Gonzalo Fernandez Gil and Moritz Mayer and Western New Mexico’s Jonathan Vega and Javier Romero.
Martinez Roca also earned the Senior of the Year award, marking the second consecutive season a player has won both the player and senior of the year honors. CU’s Almeida was named the Newcomer of the Year, while his teammate Cardona received Freshman of the Year accolades. WNMU head coach Alex Hunt was named the Coach of the Year for the first time.
Eight players were also recognized on the LSC Sportsmanship Team, headlined by WNMU’s Vega, who was honored as the Sportsmanship Player of the Year. The team was selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches, who nominated players from each LSC team that “exemplify outstanding sportsmanship, character, and ethical conduct, while displaying the true spirit of competition and college tennis.”
In total, 26 players collected all-conference recognition, with UTT earning a league-high eight selections, followed by LSC champion MSU with seven and CU with five. St. Mary’s was awarded four places on the all-conference team, while DBU and WNMU received three each.
