LUBBOCK, Texas – West Texas A&M captured both the men’s and women’s titles for the third consecutive year and fifth time overall at the 2023 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lubbock, Texas.
The Lady Buffs claimed their tenth consecutive women’s title, while the Buffs won their fifth crown overall and third consecutive champinoship. With the wins, WT has now swept the titles in 2014, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Despite entering the final day with just a four-point lead, WT took the women’s title with a program record 248 points, besting second-place Angelo State by 90 points on the way to the title. The Rambelles finished with 158 points, followed by DBU in third with 80 points.
WT won eight of the 11 events on Sunday, led by a trio of two-time champions in this year's meet. Leah Belfield led the way winning both the 60 meter and 200 meter races. In the premier sprint event, Belfield raced to her fourth-straight championship, breaking the LSC all-time record with a time of 7.38 seconds. Senior Florance Uwajaneza followed up her title in the 5,000 meters on day one with another championship in the 3,000 meters in a time of 10:03.80. Taylor Nelloms continued her dominance in the triple jump winning the event for a third time with a 12.89-meter performance. She picked up her second gold with a 1.72-meter mark in the high jump.
ASU's Shiean Walters paced the Rambelles on the final day, picking up a pair of titles while setting records in both events. Walters took home the crown in the 400 meters in 53.25 to break the LSC all-time best mark. The senior then joined Zykia McDaniel, Maricia Spence and Shadae Findley in breaking the conference and NCAA Division II record in the 4x400 meter relay, posting a blistering 3:38.38.
Eastern New Mexico's Tamia Smith muscled her way to the shot put title with a 13.69 meter (44-11) throw on her first attempt.
On the men’s side, the Buffs finished with 220 points to claim their fifth indoor championship. Texas A&M-Kingsville finished as the meet's runner-up with 129.5 points, while Angelo State rounded out the podium with 105.5 points.
The Buffs reigned supreme in four events, with freshman sprinter Isaac Bostio posting double wins in the 60 and 200 meters. Senior Butare Rugenerwa picked up a championship in the mile, posting a time of 4:15.05. The championship was his third consectuve title in the event. Luke Holcombe claimed the fourth title on the day for WT, earning a victory in the shot put with an effort of 17.10 meters (56-1.25).
TAMUK's Ja’Qualon Scott dominated in the 60 meter hurdles, receiving his first championship after a 7.88 second mark in the event final. The freshman equaled the LSC all-time best record with a 7.70 in the prelims.
Lubbock Christian grabbed a trio of individual golds, led by George Garcia's double in the 400 meters and 4x400 meter relay. Garcia posted a 47.29 in the solo event and was joined by Ryan Gordon, Chris Rader, Keitron Boyd in the 4x400 to post a time of 3:12.90. Kevin Washington took top honors in the triple jump, with a leap of 14.72 meters (48-3.5)
Elvis Kryukov won his second consecutive title in the heptathlon for the Rams, who also saw gold in the 800 meters through Oussama El Bouchayby's 1:51.04 time.
Oklahoma Christian's Owen Pearce took the top step on the podium for the second time in the meet after winning the 3,000 meters in 8:34.39.
