Lubbock Christian junior guard Rowan Mackenzie was named the Lone Star Conference Men’s Basketball Academic Player of the Year, leading a group of six standouts who earned All-Academic Team honors, the league announced on Wednesday (Feb. 28).
Mackenzie, who is from Perth, Australia and majoring in Social Work, boasts a 3.80 grade-point average. He averaged 19.5 points per game in the regular season, good for second in the LSC. He also averaged 6.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game and won three LSC Player of the Week awards. Mackenzie was the 2020-21 LSC Freshman of the Year.
Mackenzie was joined on the team by teammate Aaron Gonzales
, Midwestern State’s Derick Ogechi, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Creighton Avery and Will Chayer and West Texas A&M’s Addison Wallace.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for their entire collegiate career. The LSC All-Academic team is selected by a vote of the league’s sports information directors.
