LSC Baseball Weekly Release - Week 1

The 2023 season is underway with all Lone Star Conference teams in action.  Three teams – Angelo State, St. Edward’s, and West Texas A&M – are unbeaten to start the year.
 
      LSC teams are playing a single round-robin schedule with a four-game weekend series against each league opponent.
 
      The LSC Championship will feature a two-week tournament comprised of the top eight teams with the opening round at on-campus sites May 5-7. The winners of each opening round series will advance to a double-elimination tournament played May 11-13. The winner of the postseason tournament will be recognized as the LSC Tournament Champion and receive the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA postseason.
 
      In the NCAA Division II South Central Region, LSC teams are 0-0 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition.
 
BASEBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTER
Eduardo Acosta, Lubbock Christian, SR, Business Management, INF, San German, Puerto Rico, Montverde HS
Acosta opened up the season with a bang, batting .706 this weekend in the Chaps' opening series against Cameron. In game one, Acosta went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, scoring the first run of the season in the bottom of the first inning. He also recorded a two-RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning. In game two, the senior went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, also scoring in the bottom of the first to give LCU a 1-0 lead. Acosta was intentionally walked in the bottom of the seventh, eventually coming around to score on a walk-off grand slam home run by Chris Shull. In game three, Acosta went 1-for-4 with two runs scored, scoring the first run of the game again in the bottom of the first. In the final game of the series, Acosta saved his best for last, going 5-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs and four runs scored. He also helped turn two double plays, including the final out of the contest in LCU's 20-12 win over Cameron.
 
PITCHER
Brayden Johnson, UAFS, JR, Business Administration, RHP, Alma, Ark., Alma HS
Johnson tied his program record with 13 strikeouts in a 6-0 season opening win over East Central. He allowed just one hit over seven innings, taking a no hitter into the sixth inning. He struck out the side in the second inning.
