UT Tyler senior Gonzalo Fernandez Gil was named the Lone Star Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year as the league announced its annual men’s tennis awards on Wednesday (April 19).
Gil, who was also named Senior of the Year, went 8-0 in No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles in conference play to guide the Patriots to a conference title. He is ranked nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in singles (No. 7) and doubles (No. 11). Gil partnered with Egor Shestakov in doubles.
Lubbock Christian senior Martins Abamu was named the Newcomer of the Year, while Midwestern State’s Germano Setti was voted Freshman of the Year.
Abamu and Midwestern State senior Charles Heferman shared the title of Sportsmanship Player of the Year, headlining the LSC Men’s Tennis Sportsmanship Team, which exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship, character and ethical conduct while displaying the true spirit of competition and college tennis.
UT Tyler’s Chris Bizot was named Coach of the Year after leading the Patriots to a conference championship with an 8-0 record.
The awards are voted on by the league’s nine head coaches.
