LSC Outdoor Track and Field awards announced

Angelo State’s Oussama El Bouchayby and Lubbock Christian’s Bryce Spencer claimed Lone Star Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field individual honors, while Angelo State’s Maricia Spence swept the women’s student-athlete individual awards to highlight the league’s postseason awards, which were announced Wednesday (May 14) by the league office.

The LSC honored 135 student-athletes for their efforts at the 2023 LSC Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held May 4-6 in Lubbock, Texas.

El Bouchayby won the Cap Shelton Award, which goes to the most outstanding male track athlete. He was the high point scorer at the LSC Championships (21.25) and the champion in the 800 and 1,500 meter races.

Spencer claimed the Oscar Strahan Award, which is given to the most outstanding male field athlete. He won the Hammer Throw (60.95), finished runner up in the Discus (55.36) and fourth in the Javelin (57.86).

Spence won the Wes Kittley Award and David Noble Award, which go to the most outstanding female track athlete and field athlete, respectively. She was the high point scorer at the LSC Championships (50 – 28 in track and 22 in field). Spence won the 100 meter hurdles, 400 meter hurdles, Heptathlon (meet record) and long jump. She was also runner-up in the Javelin.

West Texas A&M’s Matt Stewart won Coach of the Year honors on both the men’s and women’s side for the third consecutive year after sweeping conference titles for the third straight year.

The list of all-conference performers includes the first team, which consists of event winners, all members of the winning relay teams, and athletes scoring 14 or more points at the LSC Championships. The second team includes athletes on the second-place relay teams and those scoring 8-13.9 points, while the third team recognizes members of third-place relay teams and athletes scoring 6-7.9 points. The individual awards were voted upon by the league coaches.

The 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships are set for May 25-27 at Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colo.
