UT Tyler’s Kalen Barlow and West Texas A&M’s Miriam Zanovello (for the second consecutive year) have been selected as Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Academic Athletes of the Year, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday (May 17).
Barlow headlined a group of 11 on the men’s All-Academic Team, while Zanovello led 11 standouts on the women’s All-Academic Team.
Barlow, a junior nursing major from Longview, Texas, has a 4.0 grade-point average. He has five runs in the top 25 this season, including a fourth-place finish in the 1,500 meters at the Jo Meaker Classic.
Joining Barlow on the men's All-Academic Team is Angelo State’s Cason Brown, DBU’s Adam Whitehead, Lubbock Christian’s Nathan Karseno, St. Edward’s Josh Akin and Nicholas Gonzalez, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s DJ Delancy and Blake Gordon, West Texas A&M’s Quinton Sansing and Western New Mexico’s James Hoban and Dylan Walker.
Delancy is a three-time selection, while Gonzales has been picked in back-to-back years.
Zanovello, a graduate student and chemistry major from Chivasso, Italy, has a 4.0 GPA. She is the 2023 LSC Indoor Track and Field Academic Athlete of the Year and 2022 LSC Outdoor Track and Field Academic Athlete of the Year. She is also a NCAA Division II national champion (2022). Zanovello has appeared on the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll three times.
Joining Zanovello on the women's All-Academic Team is her teammate Leah Belfield, Angelo State’s Shiean Walters, DBU’s Madison Brown and Rylee Cristan, Lubbock Christian’s Kiley Cummings, St. Edward’s Faith Brothers, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Vitana Robert, UT Tyler’s Marissa Agee and Abeni Kratzmeyer and Western New Mexico’s Itzela Darkenwald.
Belfield is a three-time elections, while Zanove and Cristan are back-to-back selections.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Athlete of Year Award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
