Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Shaffer leads 2024 Football All-Academic Team

Texas A&M-Kingsville junior Luke Shaffer was named Lone Star Conference Football Academic Player of the Year and leads the 11-member All-Academic Team, it was announced by the league officials on Thursday (Nov. 21).

Shaffer, who is a punter from Falls City, Texas, is a Business Administration major carrying a 4.0 grade-point average. He was a 2023 LSC All-Academic Team selection. On the field, Shaffer averaged 42.1 yards per punt, which ranked second in the conference. He had 10 booms over 50 yards and pinned nine punts inside the 20-yard line. Shaffer was the LSC Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 28.

Shaffer is joined on the LSC Football All-Academic Team by Angelo State’s Bradley Larson and Jordan McKinney; Central Washington’s Dominic Wieburg, Tyler Flanagan and Kennedy McGill; Midwestern State’s Diego Gonzalez; UT Permian Basin’s Dylan Graham and Chrishoun Roberts; Western New Mexico’s Colton Bonnington; and Western Oregon’s Dominic Hankins.

Wieburg and Flanagan were also All-Academic selections last year.

The All-Academic Team, selected by vote of the LSC sports information directors, recognizes student-athlete accomplishments in the classroom and on the football court. To be eligible for the All-Academic Team ballot, individuals must maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

As the Football Academic Player of the Year, Shaffer is a candidate for the LSC Fred Jacoby Academic Athlete of the Year award, which is announced in June.
