The Lone Star Conference has two of the top 25 ranked teams in the country, according to the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Top 25 Poll. West Texas A&M is ranked No. 8, while defending national champion Angelo State is at No. 17. UT Permian Basin is receiving votes and would be the next team in.
WT (11-3 overall) is on top of the early-season standings at 10-2, followed by UAFS (9-3 LSC). Five teams are at 9-7: ASU, Lubbock Christian, UTPB, UT Tyler and Texas A&M International.
WT has won all three of its series. St. Mary’s has won three straight games.
Three players are batting at least .440 on the young season, and two are from UAFS: Brandon Ulmer (.488) and Noah Davis (.440). Cameron’s Lance Barnett is hitting .463. Cameron’s Wyatt Grant leads the league with six home runs, LCU’s Carson Ogilve has three triples and ASU’s Tayten Treadaway has 12 doubles. TAMIU’s Abiam Medina has driven in 32 runs – eight more than anyone else.
UT Tyler’s Miles Clack, WT’s Douglas Rojas and St. Edwards righty Ben Smedshammer have a league-best three wins on the mound, while UTPB righty Brock Robarts has four saves. St. Edward’s Jakub Rayfield has a 0.47 ERA. The next closest ERA is in the 2s. ASU’s Dax Dathe has a conference-high 31 strikeouts.
ASU was the top pick in the
LSC preseason poll. ASU junior outfielder Jacob Guerrero and senior right-hander Braxton Pearson were named
LSC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

The LSC Baseball Championship will be compiled of the top eight teams based on conference standings. The top four seeds will host opening-round, best-of-three series on May 3-5 at their home parks. The winners will advance to a double elimination tournament on May 9-11 hosted by the top remaining seed.

HITTER
Brandon Ulmer, UAFS, OF, Sr., Organizational Leadership, Booneville, Ark. (BHS)
Ulmer hit for the cycle, had an eight-RBI game and batted .538 to help UAFS to a pair of road wins against Lubbock Christian. Ulmer went 4-for-5 in his cycle game and tied a school record by driving in eight runs. He had at least one RBI in all five of his at-bats. He concluded the cycle with a seventh-inning double. Over the series, he had three doubles, 10 RBIs, walked twice and stole two bases. He also scored seven times and was hit by a pitch. Ulmer leads the LSC with a .488 batting average and has helped the Lions to a 9-3 start to the season.
PITCHER
Jakub Rayfield, St. Edward’s RHP, Jr., Criminal Justice, San Antonio, Texas (Clark HS)
Rayfield tossed his second straight complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits – all singles – and striking out seven batters to defeat Eastern New Mexico. Rayfield, who takes the league’s top weekly pitching award for the second consecutive week, walked just one batter. The right-hander struck out the side to begin the game and did not allow a hit until one out in the third. Rayfield’s performance helped the Hilltoppers get in the win column in the series they had trailed 0-2 (and eventually split 2-2). He leads the LSC with a 0.47 ERA and has a scoreless streak of 14 2/3 innings.
