The Lone Star Conference baseball season is nine weeks in. The opening round of the LSC Baseball Championship is nearly one month away (May 3-5).

No. 4-ranked West Texas A&M (25-9 overall) is on top of the standings at 24-7, followed by Lubbock Christian (23-11, 22-10) and No. 19 Angelo State (22-11, 21-11). No team in the league is hotter than UT Permian Basin (20-16, 20-16), which has won seven in a row. The Falcons took three games from Eastern New Mexico then swept Cameron. UT Tyler (22-14, 22-14) is coming off a four-game sweep of ENMU.

LCU leads the league in hitting (.345), while ASU has the top pitching (5.26 ERA). ASU also owns the league’s top fielding percentage (.975). LCU’s 50 home runs are six more than any other team.

ASU’s Tripp Clark is leading the league with a .467 batting average (as well as 54 RBIs), followed by WT’s Dylan Fesperman (.443) and LCU’s Carson Ogilvie (.425). Ogilvie is also tied for the home run lead with Cameron’s Wyatt Grant (nine each). UTPB’s Carson Johnston has a league-leading seven triples, while ASU’s Jacob Guerrero is tops in doubles with 17. Texas A&M International’s Nomar Prieto and UTPB’s Mason Hamlin have each swiped an LSC-high 20 bags.

On the mound, Texas A&M-Kingsville right-hander Sergio Lopez leads the league with a 2.76 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .219 off him (also the best in the LSC). Angelo State righty Dax Dathe, LCU left-hander Ryan Markwardt and St. Edward’s righty Jakub Rayfield are tied for the league lead with six wins. Dathe’s 65 strikeouts are an LSC high. UTPB righty Brock Robarts has seven saves to lead the league.

St. Mary’s play-by-play announcer Rob Shadow has started a podcast called, “Baseball in the Lone Star Conference.” The first seven episodes are available on Spotify. Fans can listen to the entire episode or specific clips of interviews with LSC players of the week and coaches across the league. To listen, click here. Week seven interviews: St. Mary’s head coach Frank Kellner, Ogilvie and UAFS’s Brayden Ross.

ASU was the top pick in the LSC preseason poll. ASU’s Guerrero and senior right-hander Braxton Pearson were named LSC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

The LSC Baseball Championship will be compiled of the top eight teams based on conference standings. The top four seeds will host opening-round, best-of-three series at their home parks. The winners will advance to a double elimination tournament on May 9-11 hosted by the top remaining seed.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE BASEBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Games March 26-30

HITTER
Dylan Fesperman, West Texas A&M, 1B, Sr., Finance, Phoenix, Ariz. (Pinnacle HS)
Fesperman went 9-for-15 with three home runs, one triple, one double and 14 RBIs to lead nationally-ranked West Texas A&M to a road series win over UAFS. Fesperman also scored seven runs, walked twice and stole a base. He extended his hitting streak to 24 games and is now second in the league .443 batting average. In Game 1 of the four-game series, Fesperman led off the ninth inning with a solo home run to tie the game that the Buffs would eventually prevail in extra innings. He had at least two hits (one for extra bases) and two RBIs in each game. Fesperman had a two-home run, seven-RBI performance in Game 3. He played perfect defense at first base, registering 26 putouts.

PITCHER
Jan Cabrera, Texas A&M International, RHP, Sr., Education, Denton, Texas (DHS)
Cabrera tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout with six strikeouts to lead Texas A&M International to a road win over Lubbock Christian. The right-hander limited the league’s top-hitting offense to all singles and never let the Chaps advance past second base. Cabrera’s performance also halted LCU’s three-game winning streak.
