Cameron senior Lance Barnett and Texas Woman’s junior Malia Viernes headlined a group of 14 student-athletes on the fifth annual Lone Star Conference Athletic Performance All-Conference Team, it was announced by the league office on Friday (April 12).
Barnett was named LSC Male Athletic Performance Athlete of Year, while Viernes was voted LSC Female Athletic Performance Athlete of Year. The team recognizes student-athletes who excel in work ethic, dedication to process, attendance, communication, leadership and growth.
Barnett, a senior and native of Fort Worth, Texas, demonstrates great dedication to the process by always being the first one in the mornings to arrive in the weight room. He never skips repetitions and always wants to learn more about ways to train. Barnett has seen significant improvement in all categories. His 10-yard dash improved by 16 percent (1.81 seconds to 1.56). He also has a 3-percent improvement in a Fly 10 with a 10-yard build (1.17 seconds to 1.13) and 4.8 percent increase in the Fly 10 with a 20-yard build. His countermovement jump has gone from an average of 26.2 inches to 28.5. In trap bar deadlift and bench press, Barnett has an improvement of 11.7 percent and 8.3 percent, respectively. He has flourished in his senior role and set an example for everyone around him.
Barnett is the third student-athlete from Cameron to win the award. He follows fellow baseball player Weston Max, who won last year. Softball player Robyn Haynes won in 2023 on the women’s side.
Viernes, a junior and native of Cibolo, Texas, is one of the strongest student-athletes at Texas Woman’s. She is also displays one of the best attitudes and serves as a role model. Viernes currently has a front squat max of 250 pounds, a trap bar deadlift max of 345 pounds, and a floor press max of 145 pounds. She wants to do everything in her power to improve herself and she has gone above and beyond to do that in the weight room. Teammates and student-athletes from every other sport take notice of Viernes’ capabilities. Her positivity is also unmatched as she brings a contagious energy.
Viernes is the first student-athlete from Texas Woman’s to win the award.
The individual awards are voted upon by the league’s athletic performance staff.
DBU, Lubbock Christian, Midwestern State, St. Mary’s, UT Permian Basin and West Texas A&M also had at least one representative on the team.
