LSC Outdoor Track and Field awards announced

West Texas A&M’s Aziz Mohammed, Luke Holcombe, Florance Uwajeneza and Laiten Greeson claimed Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field individual honors to highlight the league’s postseason awards, which were announced Wednesday (May 15) by the league office.
 
The LSC honored 139 student-athletes for their efforts at the 2024 LSC Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held May 9-11 in San Angelo, Texas.
 
Mohammed won the Cap Shelton Award, which goes to the most outstanding male track athlete. The sophomore took gold in both the 1500 (3:46.30) and 800 (1:48.46) meters. He accumulated 20 points.
 
Holcombe claimed the Oscar Strahan Award, which is given to the most outstanding male field athlete. He was the high point scorer with 22, winning the shot put (16.94m). The junior also collected bronze in the hammer throw (53.43m) and discus (49.47m).
 
Uwajeneza earned the Wes Kittley Award, which goes to the most outstanding female track athlete. The senior was the champion in both the 5000 (17:04.66) and 10000 (37:05.97) meters. Her 5K time was a meet record. She totaled 20 points overall.
 
Greeson was voted winner of the David Noble Award, which is given to the most outstanding female track athlete. The senior was the high point scorer with 23. She won the heptathlon (5,238) and took silver in the 100 meters (14:06). Greeson was fourth in the high jump (1.59m).
 
All four athletes helped fuel their teams to an LSC championship.
 
West Texas A&M’s Matt Stewart won Coach of the Year honors on both the men’s and women’s side for the fourth consecutive year after sweeping conference titles for the fourth straight year.
 
The list of all-conference performers includes the first team, which consists of event winners, all members of the winning relay teams, and athletes scoring 14 or more points at the LSC Championships. The second team includes athletes on the second-place relay teams and those scoring 8-13.9 points, while the third team recognizes members of third-place relay teams and athletes scoring 6-7.9 points. The individual awards were voted upon by the league coaches.
 
The 2024 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships are set for May 23-25 at Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kan.

The all-conference second team consists of all members of the second-place relay teams and athletes scoring 8-13.9 points. The all-conference third team consists of all members of the third-place relay teams and athletes scoring 6-7.9 points.
