LSC outdoor track and field athletes garner eight individual national championships

Athletes from West Texas A&M and Angelo State combined to take home eight individual national championships at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships held May 23-25 at Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas.

On the first day, WT’s William Amponsah and Florance Uwajeneza won gold in the 10,000 meters. Amposah posted a 29 flat, lapping all but six runners. Uwajeneza set a new facility record with a 34:14.

The final day saw WT on top of the podium four more times, including Uwajeneza again and Isaac Botsio twice.

Uwajeneza made Lady Buff history as the first athlete to claim gold twice at the national event by winning the 5,000 meter with a 16:33. Botsio won the 100 meters with a 9.98 and anchored the 4x100 relay team, which defended its national title and set a new facility record in the process. Botsio was joined by Jace Lynch, Jerry Jakpa and Jeremiah Lauzon to record a 39:42.

WT’s Aziz Mohammed took gold in the 1,500 meters with a 3:54, edging the runner-up by a 12th of a second.

Amponsah, Botsio, Lynch, Jakpa and Lauzon helped the Buffs to a national runner-up team finish, while Uwajeneza helped the Lady Buffs to a sixth-place finish.

ASU’s Fatoumata Kabo also earned two national titles in one day. She won the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best 57.39 and was a part of the Rambelle’s 4x400-meter relay team with Zykia McDaniel, Kylie Frush and Shadae Findley. The team won with a program-record and facility-record of 3:32.88.

Kabo, McDaniel, Frush and Findley helped the Rambelles to an eighth-place team finish.

All 10 athletes were named First Team All-Americans.
