UT Tyler picked to win LSC softball title; Smith, Floyd earn preseason player awards

 
Reigning NCAA Division II national champion and Lone Star Conference season co-champion UT Tyler is favored to win the 2025 LSC softball title with the Patriots' JT Smith and Angelo State's Cheyenne Floyd claiming preseason player honors following voting by the conference softball head coaches, sports information directors and media members as announced on Friday (Jan. 24).
 
UT Tyler totaled 672 points and 34 of the possible 43 first-place votes in the poll. The Patriots enter the 2025 season after compiling 58-8 overall and 37-5 LSC records and winning the Division II regional, super regional and national titles. UT Tyler led the LSC with a 1.74 ERA and .976 fielding percentage and were second in .330 batting average (.330) and RBI 385). The Patriots enter the season ranked No. 1 in the NFCA preseason Division II coaches poll.
 
LSC Tournament champion and season co-champion West Texas A&M was picked as conference runner-up with 642 points and eight first-place votes. The Lady Buffs completed a 50-8 overall and 37-5 conference season a year ago. WT led the LSC with a .345 batting average and 390 RBI, and listed second in pitching (1.93 ERA) and fielding average (.973) a year ago. WT is listed at No. 13 in the NFCA preseason coaches poll.
 
Angelo State is slotted at third in the preseason poll at 590 points and one first-place vote after posting a 37-18 record and third in the LSC. The Rambelles are ranked No. 11 in the NFCA preseason coaches poll. A super regional finalist last season, Oklahoma Christian was voted at No 4 in the LSC preseason poll, tallying 528 points. OC posted a 35-23 record a year ago and are listed No. 24 in the NFCA preseason coaches poll.
 
Lubbock Christian and St. Mary's tied at fifth with 483 points. LCU posted a 26-22 record and St. Mary's went 32-26 in their 2024 seasons. Texas Woman's was predicted to finish seventh (382 points) followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (372), Cameron (348) and Eastern New Mexico (315) at eighth, ninth and 10th places.
 
St. Edward's (293), Midwestern State (214), Texas A&M International (215), Western New Mexico (138), UT Permian Basin (97) and LSC newcomer Sul Ross State (72) complete the 2025 LSC preseason softball poll.
 
Preseason Player Accolades
 
A senior majoring in marketing, JT Smith was selected LSC 2025 Preseason Player of the Year. The UT Tyler outfielder from Decatur, Texas, posted a .373 batting average with 52 RBI, 66 runs scored and 21 stolen bases last season. Smith earned All-LSC First Team honors in addition to South Central Region Second Team awards from the NFCA and D2CCA.
 
Cheyenne Floyd was voted the LSC 2025 Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Last season, the senior right-hander posted a 20-10 record and 1.89 ERA over 163 innings with 167 strikeouts. The 2024 LSC Pitcher of the Year was an All-America Second Team and South Central Region First Team pick by the NFCA in addition to earning LSC First Team and All-Tournament honors. A coaching/sports/recreation and fitness major from Liberty Hill, Texas, Floyd was a LSC Softball All-Academic Team member.
 
Smith and Floyd lead 16 position players and 16 pitchers cited as athletes to watch in the 2025 LSC softball season. The student-athletes were nominated by their member institution.
 
LSC Softball in '25
  • The 16 LSC teams get their respective seasons underway on January 31 competing across the south, southwest and west coast against top Division II opponents. The Lone Star Conference slate begins February 14 and runs through April 27.
  • Teams will play an LSC East-West Division schedule of doubleheader dates. Each team has a home/away set vs. each team within its division and a twin bill against each team in the opposite division for a 44-game LSC schedule.
  • Winners of the East and West Divisions earn an automatic berth in the eight-team LSC Tournament with seeding determined by conference record vs. all teams. The single-elimination league tournament is set for May 1-3 and will be hosted by the No. 1 seeded team.
  • The winner of the LSC Tournament earns the LSC automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship. The national tournament begins with the South Central Regional May 8-10 with the Super Regionals May 15-16. The Division II national finals are slated May 22-28 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
  • The 2025 season marks the 29th year of Lone Star Conference softball play. The conference sponsored its first softball season in 1997.
