The first week of Lone Star Conference Baseball is in the books.

Angelo State and UT Tyler began their season 4-0. ASU swept UT Permian Basin at home, while UT Tyler went on the road to sweep defending LSC champion Lubbock Christian. Eastern New Mexico, St. Edward’s and St. Mary’s also won their opening series with 3-1 records. Oklahoma Christian was the only league team not to play. The Eagles will open their season by hosting StMU this weekend.

ASU started the season with hot bats, hitting .445. ASU also had 11 pitchers combine for a 1.61 ERA with 30 strikeouts over 28 innings.

UT Tyler pounded out 28 extra-base hits, including seven home runs. Kaston Mason had three of those homers, becoming the program’s all-time leader (25).

ASU was the top pick in the LSC preseason poll. ASU graduate student and outfielder Jacob Guerrero and UT Tyler senior right-hander Rawley Hector were named LSC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

The LSC Baseball Championship will feature a two-week tournament comprised of the top seven teams. The opening round is best-of-three series and will be held May 2-4 at the sites of the No. 2 (vs. No. 7), 3 (vs. 6) and 4 (vs. 5) seeds. The league’s top seed from the regular season will receive an opening-round bye and host the double-elimination championship round on May 8-10. The LSC Tournament Champion will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championship.
