Amponsah, Grueso Mosquera, Abugire, Frush claim LSC Outdoor Athlete of the Year awards

West Texas A&M’s William Amponsah and Abigail Abugire, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Ronald Grueso Mosquera and Angelo State’s Kylie Frush claimed 2025 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year honors, which were announced Tuesday (June 3) by the league office.
 
Amponsah was named LSC Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year, Grueso Mosquera was tabbed LSC Male Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, Abugire won LSC Female Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and Frush was voted LSC Female Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.
 
Amponsah, who is a senior from Agona Swedru, Central, Ghana, was the NCAA Division II and LSC champion in the 10,000 meters and 5,000 meters. It was the second straight year Amposah won both the national (29:29.41) and LSC title (30:51.63) in the 10,000m. Earlier in the season, he broke the all-time Division II 10,000m record with a 27:47.93 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. In the 5,000m, he ran a 14:26.23 at nationals and a 14:24.74 at conference.
 
Grueso Mosquera, who is a senior from Cli, Columbia, was the Division II national champion in the shot put and national runner-up in the discus. He also won both events at the LSC meet. Grueso Mosquera was the Javelinas’ first outdoor national champion since 2018. At nationals, Grueso Mosquera tossed a personal-record 18.92m (62-1) in the shot put and 57.29m (187-11m) in the discus. At conference, he had an 18.71m (61-4.50) and 51.97m (170-6.00), respectively.
 
Abugire, who is a freshman from Legon, Ghana, was the national champion in the 800-meters with a program-record 2:02.93. She was the conference’s only female track athlete at the national meet to win a gold medal. In addition, Abugire was also part of WT’s 4x400 meter relay team that placed eighth at nationals with a school-record 3:35.22. At the LSC meet, she also won the 800 (2:03.73), as well as the 1,500 meters (4:34.11).
 
Frush, who is a junior from Glen Rose, Texas, finished 12th in the heptathlon at nationals with 4,815 points. She was fifth in the long jump (5.67m; 18’ 7.25”) and 200-meters (24.63m). At the LSC meet, she won the David Noble Award, which is given to the most outstanding female track athlete. Frush totaled 25 points after wining the heptathlon (5,063 points) and earning points in the long jump, triple jump, 4x400 relay and 4x100 relay.
 
All four athletes earned All-American recognition by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and were All-LSC selections.
 
The LSC honors were voted on by the league’s head coaches.
