Western New Mexico, St. Edward’s named LSC Athletic Training Staffs of the Year

Western New Mexico and St. Edward’s have been voted as the 2024-25 Lone Star Conference Athletic Training Staffs of the Year, it was announced by the conference on Wednesday (July 9).

WNMU claimed the award for a football-playing institution while SEU captured the award for an institution without football. The athletic training staffs each won the LSC honor for the second time in three years (also in 2022-23).

WNMU’s staff is led by Head Athletic Trainer Terra Dunlap, who completed her 18th year with the Mustangs. Dunlap also serves as WNMU’s Senior Woman Administrator. In 2024-25, she was assisted by Assistant Athletic Trainer Jocelyn Hurtado, Assistant Athletic Trainer Brooke Weisenberger and student assistants Selma Carrasco, Sorrin Garcia, Nicholas Bobo and Maxx Todden. The WNMU staff provides coverage for 13 varsity sport programs.

SEU’s staff is led by Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Amanda Martinez, who has been with the Hilltoppers since December of 2019. She was assisted in 2024-25 by Associate Athletic Trainer Abby Arrington, Assistant Athletic Trainer Morgan Velasquez, Assistant Athletic Trainer Larry Gipson, Assistant Athletic Trainer Shelby Stipp, Ascension Athletic Trainer Brent McKinsey and Freelance Athletic Trainer Andrea Hultgren. The SEU staff covers 16 varsity sports programs.

The LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year awards, which began in 2004-05, are voted on by the head athletic trainer of each member school. Starting in 2019-20, one award is presented to the staff of the year from a football-playing institution and one award is given to the staff of the year from a non-football playing member.

The purpose of the LSC awards is to raise awareness of the athletic training profession. Criteria for the award includes hospitality toward visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness with supplies, equipment, and services for visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness for emergency situations; and care for injured athletes from visiting teams.
