LONE STAR CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
(Oct. 17 games)
OFFENSIVE
Ryder Bumgarner, Central Washington, RB, Sr., Sport Management, Stanwood, Wash.
Central Washington senior running back Ryder Bumgarner ran for five touchdowns to lead the No. 11-ranked Wildcats to a 52-49 road win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. Bumgarner had 165 yards on 27 carries and also caught a pass for 25 yards. He had two TDs in the first quarter, two in the second and one in the third. His longest TD run was for 38 yards to give CWU its first lead with 6:02 left in the first quarter. Bumgarner is just the second player in the conference to score five times on the ground in a single game this season. His performance helped the Wildcats stay unbeaten in league play (5-0) and snap the Javelinas’ four-game winning streak. Bumgarner leads the league with 14 rushing TDs – six more than anyone else.
DEFENSIVE
Brycen Lewis, Midwestern State, S, Jr., Childhood Development, Dallas, Texas
Midwestern State junior safety Brycen Lewis had a career-high 17 tackles – eight solo – and forced a fumble to help the Mustangs hold off Angelo State, 36-32. Lewis’ tackle total is the second most in a single game in the conference this season and most by a MSU player since 2018. Lewis and company allowed just one touchdown after halftime, including a shutout in the third quarter. ASU got the ball with 4:10 left to play and trailing 36-32, and Lewis made four tackles on that drive to help MSU defeat the Rams for the first since 2021. Lewis has made 31 tackles over the last two weeks.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Zakkarii Black, Western New Mexico, KR, Jr., Social Science, Sacramento, Calif.
Western New Mexico junior Zakkarii Black returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to help the Mustangs top Sul Ross State 48-41 on the road. Black’s return came with 17 second left in the third quarter right after Sul Ross State made it a one-possession game (34-27). He became just the fifth player in the conference to take back a kickoff all the way this season. Black also joins Western Oregon’s Tony McAdoo as the only players in the LSC to score a TD three different ways (rushing, receiving and kick return) this year.
