No. 12 Central Washington, Midwestern State, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Sul Ross State earned conference victories, while UT Permian Basin won a non-conference matchup over No. 21 Northeastern State during Week 5 of Lone Star Conference football. Week 6 will feature all 10 teams in conference action (Eastern New Mexico at Western New Mexico; TAMUK at Western Oregon; SRSU at Angelo State; UTPB at WT; and MSU and CWU).
MSU is tops in the league in total offense (583.4 yards per game), while TAMUK is tops in defense (372 yards per game). UTPB is scoring a conference-best 45.8 points per game and allowing a league-low 20.4 points per game. CWU (46.8 yards per game) is the least penalized team in the LSC.
CWU was picked to repeat as the LSC champion this season, according to the league’s
preseason poll. WOU senior quarterback Jordan McCarty and CWU senior linebacker Brycen Indell were predicted to win
preseason player of the year honors.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE
Will Howell, Sul Ross State, QB, Fr., Kinesiology, Tucson, Zriz.
Sul Ross State freshman quarterback Will Howell passed for four touchdowns, ran for two more scores and totaled 536 yards of total offense to lead a 56-43 win over Eastern New Mexico. Howell, who wins the league’s top weekly offensive award for the second time this season, finished 37-for-46 passing for 454 yards. He carried the ball 22 times. With the score tied 43-43 with under three minutes to play, Howell threw two TD passes to give the Lobos their first LSC win since 2024. His total yardage is the most in a single game in NCAA Division II this season and ranks third in program history. Howell’s completion and TD totals are also tops in the conference this year.
DEFENSIVE
McKyle So’oto, UT Permian Basin, LB, Sr., Psychology, Oceanside, Calif.
UT Permian Basin senior linebacker McKyle So’oto had 15 tackles – 10 solo – one interception and one sack to fuel a 38-27 road win over No. 21 Northeastern State. Two of his tackles were for loss and he led a unit that set a program record with five interceptions. So’oto had seven tackles – five solo – in the fourth quarter alone. His INT, which he returned 28 yards, came in the third quarter as UTPB kept the RiverHawks off the scoreboard. So’oto has helped the Falcons to a four-game winning streak.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Samaje Featherstone, Central Washington, KR, Sr., Business Administration, Oakland, Calif.
Central Washington senior Samaje Featherstone totaled 127 kick return yards – the most in a single game in the LSC this season – to help the No. 12-ranked Wildcats defeat Angelo State, 41-14, for the first time in San Angelo, Texas. Featherstone’s longest of three returns went for 75 yards and set up a touchdown. He also added two catches for 22 yards playing wide receiver. Featherstone has helped the Wildcats to a 3-0 start in conference play.
