For the third straight week, the Lone Star Conference has the No. 1-ranked softball team in the country as West Texas A&M remains atop of the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Poll released on March 31. The Lady Buffs (31-3 overall, 21-1 in LSC) have won 18 games in a row.

Angelo State (27-8, 16-4 LSC) is ranked No. 12 and Oklahoma Christian (29-8, 21-5 LSC) is at No. 13.

Following WT’s winning streak is Texas A&M-Kingsville (19-11, 14-6 LSC), which has won seven in a row and just swept ASU. OC has won three straight games, as well as UT Tyler (28-8, 20-4). St. Mary’s (21-16, 13-11 LSC) has won three of its last four, including topping OC 2-1 on the road.

WT leads the league in hitting (.410) and fielding (.980), while ASU is tops in pitching (2.76 ERA).

The WT duo of senior infielder Jordyn De Los Santos and freshman left-handed pitcher/designated hitter Brooke Janning swept the first National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Louisville Slugger Player of the Week and Wilson Pitcher of the Week awards of the season, respectively.

Two-time defending national champion and UT Tyler was the top pick in the LSC preseason poll. ASU senior outfielder Tatiana Trotter and OC senior right-hander Jill Dickson were named LSC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, to headline the 34 players on the league’s Preseason Watch List.

The nine-team, single-elimination LSC Softball Championship is scheduled for May 6-9 (Wednesday-Saturday) at the site of the league’s No. 1 seed. The LSC Tournament Champion will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championship.

The South Central Regionals are scheduled for May 14-16 with the Super Regional following on May 21-22. The campus sites are TBD. The national finals are set for May 28-June 3 at Frost Stadium at Warner Park in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Due to being NCAA Division II provisional members, UT Dallas and Sul Ross State are not eligible for the LSC or NCAA tournament but are eligible to win the LSC regular season title and postseason awards.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE SOFTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

(March 24-29 games)

HITTER
Dakota Martinez, Texas A&M-Kingsville, 1B, Jr., Art, Brownsville, Texas
Texas A&M-Kingsville junior first baseman Dakota Martinez hit .600 with a home run and four RBI to fuel a doubleheader sweep of No. 10 Angelo State. Martinez went 2-for-3 with a homer in Game 1 – her second straight game and third time in four games to go deep – in the 5-3 win. She drove in two runs and scored once in both victories. Martinez, who wins the league’s top weekly hitting award for the second time this season, also walked once and did not strike out. Her performance helped the Javelinas extend their winning streak to seven games and sweep a top-10 opponent for the first time since 2022. Martinez has hit safely in 12 of her last 13 games, with seven of those being multi-hit performances.

PITCHER
Arielle Saenz, St. Mary’s, RHP, Sr., Law, Pharr, Texas
St. Mary’s senior right-hander Arielle Saenz tossed a complete-game four-hitter with no walks to defeat No. 12 Oklahoma Christian on the road. Saenz then shut out Cameron on the road. On the week over three appearances that spanned 16 1/3 innings, Saenz went 2-0 with an 0.86 ERA. Opponents hit just .167 off her. In her victory over OC, Saenz struck out two batters and allowed just one extra-base hit in the 2-1 game.

FRESHMAN
Jaclyn Pate, Sul Ross State, RHP, Fr., Agricultural Business, Comanche, Texas
Sul Ross State freshman right-hander Jaclyn Pate tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout with five strikeouts to earn the road win over UT Dallas. Pate allowed just two singles – only one made it to the outfield – and did not issue a walk. Pate retired the final 11 batters she faced. Pate became the first SRSU pitcher to record a shutout in LSC play.
