Lubbock Christian junior Kelly Giese was named the Lone Star Conference Men’s Tennis Singles Player of the Year and was also a part of league’s Doubles Team of the Year with Mattia Ghedin on Wednesday (April 29) at the LSC Tennis Championships Reception at Hilton Garden Inn in Arlington, Texas.
Giese, who is from Manhattan Beach, Calif., is 21-1 overall and posted a perfect 8-0 record in conference play at No.1 singles. Giese, who also won the league’s Player of the Year honors last season, has a 19-match winning streak entering the postseason. He has been nationally-ranked inside the top 5 all season.
Giese and Ghedin, who is from Treviso, Italy, are 17-6 overall and went 7-1 at No. 1 doubles. They have been nationally-ranked inside the top 10 since the start of league play.
UT Tyler’s Carel Wessel earned the title of Senior of the Year. UT Tyler sophomore Samuel Antwi was voted Newcomer of the Year, while UT Permian Basin’s Nehal Naidoo was named Freshman of the Year.
UT Dallas senior Benjamin Dubois was named LSC Sportsmanship Player of the Year and headlined the nine-player Sportsmanship Team, which exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship, character and ethical conduct while displaying the true spirit of competition and college tennis.
LCU head coach Hutton Jones was named LSC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year after guiding the Chaps to their LSC first regular season title in program history with an 8-0 record.
The awards are determined by a vote of the league’s nine head coaches.
