The Angelo State University and University of Texas at Tyler athletic departments each claimed Lone Star Conference Academic Excellence Awards for the 2025-26 academic year, it was announced by the league office on Monday (Aug. 17).
Angelo State earned its first women's Academic Excellence Award while UT Tyler captured its second men's award and third overall. The annual awards, presented by the LSC for the 13th year, recognize the athletic departments with the highest collective men's and women's team grade-point average (GPA) for the academic year.
"The Lone Star Conference congratulates the student-athletes at Angelo State and UT Tyler on this most prestigious award," LSC Commissioner Jay Poerner said. "We are pleased to honor these two institutions for their outstanding academic success and continuing commitment to excellence in the classroom."
ASU posted the highest team grade-point average in three LSC women's sports -- indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, and tennis. Forty-six Rambelles across nine women's sports posted 4.00 GPAs for the combined fall and spring semesters. The 2025-26 Academic Excellence Award is the first for ASU in women's or men's sports.
UT Tyler posted the highest team grade-point average in three LSC men's sports -- soccer, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. For the combined fall and spring semesters, 27 Patriots over eight men's sports finished with 4.00 GPAs. This is UT Tyler's third all-time LSC Academic Excellence award, winning both the women's and men's titles in 2020-21.
The Western New Mexico women's golf program recorded the highest single sport GPA among the 19 conference sports programs and the 10 women's sports with a 3.901 for the year. The WNMU men's golf team led LSC men's sports programs with a 3.832 GPA.
UT Tyler topped the LSC with five sport academic champions -- men's and women's soccer, men's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, and softball. ASU (women's indoor and outdoor track and field, women's tennis) and Lubbock Christian (men's tennis, women's basketball, softball) tied with three LSC sport academic champions each.
On the women's side, Texas Woman's claimed a third straight academic champion in stunt while UT Tyler posted its third consecutive softball academic champion.
For the men, Western New Mexico collected a third golf academic champion with Eastern New Mexico the LSC football academic champion for a second straight year.
Overall, eight LSC sports had all competing teams post a 3.00 or better GPA for the year -- women's basketball, men's golf, women's soccer, stunt, men's and women's tennis, women's indoor track and field, and volleyball.
The LSC Academic Excellence Award winners are determined by gender, ranking team grade-point average in each conference-sponsored sport to earn points toward the overall men's or women's award.
