Only three of the 10 Lone Star Conference football teams played during Week 2. UT Permian Basin topped Western New Mexico in the first conference game of the season, while No. 9 Central Washington fell to top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Ferris State. Week 3 will feature all LSC teams playing in the same week for the first time this season. In fact, they will all be in action on the same day (Saturday, Sept. 19) and will all be playing league games. Included in the slate is a ranked showdown between CWU and No. 12 Western Oregon in Ellensburg, Wash. Last season on the final day of the regular season, that game decided the league title as CWU won 19-17 in Monmouth, Ore.
 
WOU is tops in the league in total offense (525.5 yards per game), while Sul Ross State is tops in defense (320.5 yards per game). WOU is scoring a conference-best 43.5 points per game and CWU is allowing a league-low 26 points per game. Angelo State (34 yards per game) is the least penalized team in the LSC.
 
CWU was picked to repeat as the LSC champion this season, according to the league’s preseason poll. WOU senior quarterback Jordan McCarty and CWU senior linebacker Brycen Indell were predicted to win preseason player of the year honors.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE
JT Seagreaves, UT Permian Basin, TE, Gr., MBA, Monroe, Wis.
UT Permian Basin graduate student and tight end JT Seagreaves caught two touchdowns in the first quarter to set the tone in a 69-14 conference-opening victory over Western New Mexico. Seagreaves had three catches for 72 yards. His first score was for five yards and came at 7:13 in the first quarter to make it 10-0. He then hauled in a 67-yard TD on the Falcons’ next possession. Both his TDs were thrown by Nate TenBarge. Seagreaves helped UTPB total 554 yards of total offense.
 
DEFENSIVE
Layne Horak, UT Permian Basin, DB, Sr., Criminal Justice, Rockwall, Texas
UT Permian Basin senior defensive back Layne Horak had an interception he returned 95 yards for a touchdown and forced a fumble to help lead the Falcons to a 69-14 win over Western New Mexico in the conference opener for both teams. Horak also had four solo tackles – one for a loss – and a pass break-up. His INT return came in the second quarter and the fumble he forced was recovered and set up a TD. Horak and company allowed just 55 rushing yards and one offensive TD.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Diego Chavarria, UT Permian Basin, K, Jr., Human Performance, Stephenville, Texas
UT Permian Basin junior kicker Diego Chavarria totaled 15 points to help the Falcons win their conference opener 69-14 over Western New Mexico. Chavarria was perfect on his two field goals attempts (22 and 42 yards) and nine extra-point attempts. His first field goal was the first score of the game and his second gave the Falcons a 20-0 lead in the first quarter. He also handled kickoff duties four different times.
