LSC Basketball Weekly Release: Four teams undefeated

LSC BASKETBALL
The Lone Star Conference has four unbeaten teams - three men’s and one women’s.  Non-conference action continues with one league game this week on the women’s side (Texas Woman’s at Midwestern State).
    The LSC men have a 39-17 overall record so far this season.  In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 12-6 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 1-3 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
    The LSC women are 34-24 overall. The women’s squads are currently 9-10 combined against the Heartland, and 7-5 versus RMAC teams, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.


PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Rashad Basey, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, SR, Guard, Louisville, Ky, Jefferstown HS
Basey continues to play a key role in the Javelina offense averaging 21.5 points a game last week on 43.3 shooting. He was 15-of-18 free throw on the week in the two games for 83.3%. Basey added six assists and six steals. In the Javelinas win over St. Edward’s, Basey was 6-of-13 from the floor with a pair of 3-point baskets. He added 10-of-12 free throw shooting in the game. Basey scored six points and a key assists in the final three minutes to seal the win. In Saturday’s rematch with UTPB, Basey finished with 19 points, two assists and three steals. On the year, Basey leads the Javelinas with 19 points which is tied for the LSC lead.

MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Christian Macauley, Texas A&M University - Commerce, JR, Forward, Washington, D.C., Paint Brush HS
Macauley played a key role in helping A&M-Commerce to a pair of victories in Arkansas over the weekend. The junior pulled down 15 rebounds while adding seven blocks and two steals, all while averaging eight points a game. In the 96-78 rout of Southern Arkansas, Macauley recorded the second double-double of his Lion career with 11 points and 10 rebounds, including six defensive, with a block and a steal. Against Henderson State, Macauley came up big with a career-best six blocks, one shy of the program’s single game record, with four defensive rebounds and a steal while adding five points as the Lions rallied for a 75-74 victory over Henderson State. Macauley’s performance has helped A&M-Commerce to an 8-0 start, matching the program’s second-best start to a season and the first since the 1953-54 season.

WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Lindsey Mahone, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, JR, Guard, Corpus Christi, Texas, Carroll HS
In two games this past week, junior transfer Lindsey Mahone had a tremendous all-around week. Mahone led the Javelinas to a 1-1 record on the week averaging 24.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.5 steals. She hit 56% (14-25) from the floor and was 19-of-32 at the foul line. In a last second loss to Southern Arkansas, Mahone scored a season-high 27 points with five rebounds on 7-of-14 shooting the floor. She was 12-of-15 from the foul line. Defensively, she added six steals matching Rosalie Cutri’s high. In Saturday’s win over Texas A&M International in double overtime, she recorded the first double-double of the year by a Javelina. She finished with 22 points and 7-of-11 from the field with 12 rebounds. Ten of her rebounds came on the defensive end and she added three more steals.

WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Devin Griffin, West Texas A&M University, SR, Forward, Lubbock, Texas, Coronado HS
Griffin had another outstanding weekend as she was second in scoring at 10.5 points and second in rebounding at 7.0 per game. She shot .471 from the field on 8 of 17 and was 5 of 8 from the line. Griffin earned a spot on the PAK-A-SAK Classic All-Tournament Team and helped hold the opposition to .390 from the field and .290 from beyond the arc. It was the third and fourth consecutive opponents WT has held under 40 percent shooting and the third and fourth opponents WT has held under 60 points. The Lady Buffs held the opponents to average just 30.0 rebounds per game and forced 40 turnovers and tallied 29 steals with a season-high 19 steals against Incarnate Word Friday. Griffin tied for the team lead with five steals for the week.
