Baseball: Academic awards announced by LSC

Texas A&M-Kingsville pitcher Denver Diefenbach led the Lone Star Conference Baseball All-Academic Team, as the league’s annual postseason awards were announced prior to the start of this week’s LSC Baseball Championship.

Diefenbach was tabbed Academic Player of the Year to headline the All-Academic team.  A graduate student from Victoria, Texas, he leads the league in wins with a 9-3 record including a stretch with seven straight LSC victories.  Diefenbach has appeared in 13 games with a 3.10 ERA.

Diefenbach was joined by Javelina teammate Dallas Ponder; Angelo State’s David Goggin and Christian Summers; Tarleton State’s Alvaro Moreno; Cameron’s Brad Blumer; West Texas A&M’s Scott Cone and Tyler McKnight; and Eastern New Mexico’s Rafael Romo.

Blumer was recognized for the third time in his career.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
