LSC Soccer Championship: A&M-C takes title

Texas A&M-Commerce used an offensive surge to defeat West Texas A&M 4-0 in the Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Championship game Sunday in San Angelo, Texas.

A&M-C, who earned the league’s automatic bid in the NCAA Division II Championship, captured their second straight tournament championship and fourth overall (2014, 2004, 1999).  A&M-C improved to 4-3 in seven final appearances.

The Lions won their sixth straight game and scored four or more goals for the fifth time this season.

A&M-C started the scoring with a Jade Bell goal slotted far post off her own rebound at the 16:39 mark.  Just 44 seconds later, Vicky Back stretched the A&M-C lead to 2-0 with a shot from 15 yards out into the back of the net.

The Lions added a third score right before halftime on a shot from 18 yards out by Savannah Grasser in the 41st minute.  Grasser scored her second goal of the game on a breakaway in the 88th minute to put the Lions up 4-0.

The A&M-C defense posted a shutout including seven saves by Courtnie Northern.

Back was tabbed tournament MVP with Grasser, Taylor Rhodes, Madison Cordts, and Ashley Phillips joining her on the all-tournament team.

WT outshot A&M-C 24-17 with a team-high eight by Karyn Forbes, who along with Kaitlin Steele and Khadisha Debesette earned all-tournament honors.

The Lady Buffs season ends at 10-10-1 including four wins in the last five contests.

The entire NCAA Division II Championship field will be announced Monday, November 9 at 5:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
