Angelo State cruises past Bacone

ARLINGTON, Texas – Angelo State raced out to a commanding lead by halftime and cruised from there, claiming a 56-0 non-conference win over Bacone (Okla.) in the finale of the Lone Star Football Festival on Saturday at AT&T Stadium.

It was the first ever meeting between Lone Star Conference member ASU (3-0) and NAIA Central States Football League team Bacone (0-3).

ASU used five second-quarter touchdowns – highlighted by a 96-yard run by Trey Green – and built a 49-0 lead heading into the break. ASU’s defense held the shutout in the second half, while the offense tacked on a final touchdown on a 9-yard run by Jacob Burtch with 6:33 left to play.

ASU’s Ryan Byrd set the tone in the first quarter by finding the end zone twice on 7 and 5-yard runs, respectively.

In addition to Green’s TD in the second quarter, ASU got three scoring passes from the arm of Kyle Washington. He connected with Talon Smith, Tyler Middleton and Brett Raspberry. Smith wowed the crowd by doing an acrobatic flip in order to scale two defenders and land in the end zone.  Middleton also ran for a 5-yard TD to cap the 35-point quarter.

ASU’s starters saw limited action in the second half. Washington finished 15 of 20 for 218 yards and no interceptions. Green totaled 110 yards on three carries. Josh Sparkman was 8-for-8 on extra-point attempts. Grant Aschenbeck had eight tackles to lead the Rams’ defense unit, which held Bacone to 65 yards on 29 rushing attempts. Jeremy Johnson also forced and recovered a fumble, while Clayton Callicutt had two sacks.

Bacone quarterback Trey Seward was 13 of 28 for 92 yards and no interceptions. Brian Williams had five catches for 42 yards. David Alexander and Shawndell Kirkland had nine tackles each for the Warriors’ defense.

Angelo State begins LSC play Sept. 26 as it travels to face West Texas A&M with a 5 p.m. kickoff. Bacone hosts Panhandle State (Okla.) the same day with a 2 p.m. start.

The one-day, six-team Lone Star Football Festival also featured Midwestern defeating Eastern New Mexico 28-24 and West Texas A&M topping Tarleton State 52-38. The fifth-annual event welcomed 11,094 fans.
