The first half of the Wednesday’s opening game of the Lone Star Conference Championship didn’t exactly resemble a typical matchup between No. 2 and 7 seeds.
But the second half was a different story as second-seeded Angelo State used a 17-0 run in the third and fourth quarters, lifting the Belles to a 71-60 win over underdog Eastern New Mexico at the Allen Event Center.
Down by two at the half, ASU (20-7) picked up the pace, led by three players in double-figure scoring. Taylor Dorsey led all scorers with 20 points, along with seven rebounds. Diamalises Rivera came off the bench to collect 15 points and a team-high nine boards while Brea Mitchell also added 13 points.
The season will end for ENMU at 10-17, while the Belles advance to Friday’s semifinal round and will face the winner of the Texas Woman’s/Cameron matchup, which is set for Thursday afternoon.
The Greyhounds shot 40 percent from the floor in the first half, including 7-of-16 from 3-point land. But in the second half, they made just 3-of-20 attempts, one of the reasons why ASU’s game-changing run.
ENMU’s Jasmine Hotchkins made one of the few 3-pointers with 5:05 left in the third quarter, giving the Greyhounds a 46-44 lead. But the Greyhounds wouldn’t score again until the 6:00 mark of the fourth quarter on an Eliza Martinez layup, which trimmed ASU’s lead to 13.
The Greyhounds as had two players in double figures, led by Mikaehla Connor’s 16 points. Sarah Stinnett added 13 while Martinez and Kassandra Harris had 11 and 10 rebound respectively. ENMU actually led the rebounding edge 52-47, highlighted by four different players with at least seven boards.
The biggest advantage for the Rambelles came at the foul stripe, where they hit 17 of 22 attempts. ENMU only went to the line seven times, hitting four.
