Winning a championship, especially defending one, usually takes a team effort from top to bottom.
If that’s the case, Angelo State got off to a great start Thursday in the opening game of the LSC Women’s Basketball Championship in Allen.
With the LSC Player of the Year Jasmine Prophet limited due to fouls and held overall to just two points, the Rambelles had others pick up the slack in cruising past seventh-seeded Cameron 88-71 at the Allen Event Center.
While ASU entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, the Rambelles are the defending champions, seeking back-to-back titles for the second time in school history (2004-05).
ASU got 19 points from Bria Frierson, who was a perfect 7 of 7 from the field and made all five free throws. Christina Robinson scored 18 points to help the Rambelles improve to 23-4. They also entered this weekend as the No. 2 seed in the latest South Central Regional rankings and a strong showing in Allen could propel them to the top spot and eventual host of the regional tournament.
The season ends for Cameron at 11-16.
The Aggies got into a steep hole early in the game, making just four of 21 field-goal attempts in the first quarter. Cameron did chip away in the second quarter, cutting ASU’s lead to 27-23 before Robinson and Frierson helped push the lead back to 44-33 at the half.
In the third, ASU stayed hot, outscoring Cameron 31-14. The Rambelles led by as much as 34 in the fourth before the Aggies sliced the down to 17 at the final buzzer.
Cameron was led by Jamie Bonnarens, who had 24 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Ava Battese and Christina Soriano each scored 12. Charron Montgomery came off the bench to score six and dish out six assists.
Along with Robinson and Frierson, ASU picked up 13 points from KeAnna Kelly, 11 each from Taylor Dorsey and Chenelle Pelle, who also had 10 boards. Lexi Murphy had 12 rebounds and eight points.
ASU advances to Saturday’s semifinal round where they will play the winner of West Texas A&M and Texas Woman’s at 12 p.m.
